Walking to the store to buy a pack of smokes for one/both of my parents, standing behind the metal bladed fan with no cage on it talking like Darth Vader, candy cigarettes, riding "The Trails" off of College St in Cleveland, climbing to the top of the tallest cedar on College St and getting my booty tanned even though I didn't fall and made it down safely, chasing the skeeter truck, bird dogging for Dad when he shot a "limit" of anything, riding in the truck standing up in the seat behind his shoulder (that was our car seat), sneaking Mr. Kitchens' Red Man out from under his sink and proceeding to throw my guts up for an hour. But my favorite: waking up early at Granny & Pawpaw's on Moon Lake and seeing him with his bare feet propped on the oven door, broiler on, smoking non filters, drinking coffee...

I'm 29 and I used to ride on my grandfather's Ford Jubilee tractor on a toolbox bolted to the fender right above the PTO. I was his rear view mirror when he was bailing hay to know if the bailer was clogged or a bail broke. Would also ride when he was cutting too. All the while the PTO was spinning at normal speed and it didn't bother me one bit. Oh yeah, that tractor didn't have live PTO like newer tractors and he used a modified bush hog to cut hay with, not a sickle.

How about not having a cell phone? I'm 22 and I remember when there were no cell phones... Children these days will never know what it's like not to have every electronic device known to man available to them at a whim.

TV:
Channel 6, 9, 18, and 23 were it. Of course 18 and 23 were both PBS. Saturday morning cartoons were great. Channel 6 news was good, thought you were really up to date on anything going on. Johnny Casio went to area schools and did interviews with coaches and players. We finally got rabbit ears so we could pick up 15 in Greenville. Man was we happy to see some new shows. After that we got a big extension thing on the outside antenna and we could get Memphis stations.
WORK:
Chopping cotton was always a summer regular, but the money was nice and the education you got from listening to the old hands was priceless. Tromping cotton after school was fun (pre module maker times). We really just played in the trailers and helped drag cotton out of the picker, but PaPa always said we could get another bale and 1/2 on a trailer once the school kids showed up.
RECREATION:
Do not remember being bored like kids today talk about. Rode bicycles alot. Played on creek banks. Toy tractors, hiding switches, cops & robbers, baseball until we would lose the ball....always something to do. Great dove fields back then. Grain was harvested alot later and was much easier to concentrate the birds. Squirrel season opening was a big thing. Deer and duck in Dec & Jan. Would start fishing in late Jan....buffalo nets. We would catch hundreds in the flood water. Catch so many we would back cotton trailers down in the creek and throw the fish in to hold them. Love some buffalo ribs. Cook a big stew every March with all of the game killed during the past winter. Have enough stew to eat till next season.

Working the farm I lived on and pulling a calf at 4 in the morning in the sleet during calving season.
Riding in the back of the pickup everywhere.
Driving a column $#!+ pickup to the store. Do they even make a column $#!+ anymore? Dad always told me you could drive anything if you learned to drive a column shift.
Shooting squirrels out of the old pecan orchard on the back of the farm.
Playing in the woods in shorts and tennis shoes with no socks. It's a wonder I never got snake bit. It sure wasn't from lack of opportunity.
