Anyone tried one of the AMPU plug and play type amps? Just curious on your opinions for sound quality and reliability.

I have quite a few guitars but the guitar I play the most is a Takamine Natural Series. It doesn't have a pick guard and I am working on a Willie Nelson style hole from playing it over the years. I have been playing in bands and solo gigs for 15 years and I have been playing my Takamine for about the last seven years. It has top notch electronics and a great sound. I play it though an SWR California Blond amp which is made for an acoustic guitar. My usual set up when I play solo is running my Takamine through the SWR with two Peavey PR 12 speakers on stands. I like the SWR because it has a separate mic channel so I dont need a separate head to run everything through. When I go to shows I like to see what the big boys are playing and I've seen Steve Earl and Jerry Jeff Walker both playing through an SWR California Blond. They have a great sound, but the downside is they are extremely heavy.

You can also play an acoustic amp through a sound system with no amp involved. That's what I do at our church. Play the guitar though a mic port and it sounds good

He has alot of talent and will be using it in a band, and Id like to get a good one but, like I said, cant afford new or top end. Searching hard. I play a Larrivee and LOVE it.

They're definitely considered "top end" but you really can't go wrong the pickups and entire electrical system in a Taylor. If your son is serious, I'd say save up for a bit and get him a good Taylor. I currently play a Martin and absolutely love it, but I went piddling around in a music store the other day and picked up a Taylor 315ce and fell in love with it. It's gonna take a while to save up for it but it'll be well worth it. Honestly, the main thing when buying a solid, lasting guitar is that when your son plays it, its the best sounding/playing guitar he's ever picked up. Make sure he plays several different brands and models before you finally buy one so there is no doubt its the one he wants.
