.35 Whelen 200gr @ 100yrds +2.8” @ 200yrds +1.0”
45/70 300gr @ 100yrds +2.7” @ 200yrds -9.2”
If you want to take the primitive out of primitive weapon season, get the Whelen.

I have a 35 whelen in TC Prohunter and shoot Remington Core Lokts and love the gun. I saw where Vans is carrying a Barnes bullet for them.
Just don't forget about the 405 caliber.....a lot of people around here shoot them.

The encores are very nice but are more than twice the price than the h&r and the cva is a nice gun too. Anything for two hundred yards in the 444 is good but the wheelen is good to 300. I love my wheelen in encore but also like my h&r for the price. All depends on how much you want to spend.

Is h and r the same as harrington and richardson? Any reviews? They are in my price range.

I looked at the Cva's version today. $30 more than the H and R but it felt 100 times better in my hands. I also liked the Encore style stock that comes in the Cva's verses the standard handi rifle stock. I live the encore but I can't make myself justify the money for a third hunting rifle. I am still telling myself that I want a brush, less than 150 yards, big lead gun. The 444 fits all those categories and it will make me legal if I have to travel somewhere else to hunt

Also I have a question...is the 444, or 35's or 405 legal in all primitive firearm situations? Someone told me today that they didn't THINK you could hunt with a 444 in national forests or game management areas? I thought the followed the state law on calibers normally

The management areas I have checked you can. The cva I had shot very good when it shot but that is a common problem with the wheelen. I would only get the wheelen in encore the others you may have to send back. I like my 45-70 and 444 handi rifles. I hunt with my encore in the wheelen now tho.

You can't use em on any Federal Refuge! Federal refuges require blackpowder muzzeloaders only! You can't even use an encore with a muzzel loader barrel on it there either! Nor can you use the T/C or a .35 in Louisiana unless they've changed the rules. The encore could give you some problems in some states with legality because of the interchangeble barrels. As far as the shooting problems they've pretty much got that solved as long as you stay with the new ammo.

The bogue chitto national wildlife refuge is federal and they allow state legal primitive weapons. They have land in both La and Ms.

Becuase it's run by the state and not the feds. Just like Delta National Forest!
