First line of defense...a big, loud dog. Second line of defense...shotgun she is comfortable with. We are blessed in Mississippi to have liberal gun laws that allow for pretty much anything within reason in self defense on your property. Pretty much anything extends even further when it is a woman defending herself and/or her children.

HAHAHA!!!

Ya. Just build a moat around your house deep enough that it requires someone to swim. Filling it with Piranhas or alligators is optional.

a guy in college lived in a predominately darker trailer park and had cow skulls and other things that hinted voodoo laying/hanging around...said he didn't have a lick of trouble, got a few sideways glances, but no trouble. the previous tenants clued him in, but took theirs when they left. there wasn't a whole lot hanging everywhere, just a few strategically placed items.

When thinking about a home defense weapon you need to make sure that the firearm is easy to operate. If someone comes in the house in the middle of the night you don't want your wife to have to worry about if there is one in the chamber and 3 in the mag or racking a slide.. Chances are she is going to be scared and nervous and we tend to forget details when that happens..
The simpliest fireare to operate is a revolver. No safety, no ejecting a round just point and pull the trigger. For that reason, my suggestion is a 38 snubby. You can load rat shot as the first round and it will have the same basic effect of bird shot in a shotgun. Then load the remaining with self defence loads. Tell your wife that if someone enters the house to put that first round of rat shot in his face. That will slow him down long enough to put the remaining rounds center mass.

I wound up putting a laser on my Sig and told her if she could get it turned on put it on in intruder's forehead or chest she probably wouldn't have to shoot, and if that didn't work scream like a banshee and shoot the ceiling full of holes.
Your wife sounds a lot like mine. Good idea on the laser. Our bedside gun is a Browning BPS High Capacity 12gauge with a 20" barrel loaded with alternating 00 and slugs. She is petite so I told her to aim for their balls, maybe the recoil will place the shot in their chest.

just be careful when that little one gets older. my under the bed shotgun is no more. I have a couple handguns that are in a safe that I can get to pretty easily.

Appreciate all the insight guys. Not going to say what we went with but I took the wife out this afternoon and put her through a couple hours and a box of rounds with the weapon, a whole lot of just getting familiar with the operation of it. Hope she never has to use it but with me leaving for deployment number 3 in a few weeks I want her to be ready

Kimber Guardian Angel or Dragonfire OC gun with the LED light. No matter what you think, a woman is not gonna pick up a lethal firearm as a first option. Studies have proved that. They are much more likely to use a nonlethal option and much less likely to hurt themselves or "friendlies" in the process. I don't care what y'all billy-bad-ass kill em all & let God sort em out guys say, this is the reality. Buy several of these weapons & put them throughout the house, in the purse & the car. They are much more likely to use them and kids are much safer around them. Plus they will bring Godzilla to his knees long enough to get her and the kids away safely.

a hammerless .38 special she can keep in her nightstand or purse. I keep one loaded on my nightstand. My mother has a .32 she keeps in hers.

What, What, WHAT?
Rat shot in the face? shoot for the balls? bird shot?
Dead men tell no tales.
Training, Training, Training. Use Lethal Force when and where absolutely necessary, and without prejudice or hesitation. When panic takes over before instinct then you haven't drilled "hope for the best, prepare for the worst" into their heads enough.

I would second training. Whatever the choice teach and train even if they bitch about it. When the chit hits the fan training will take over.
When we had kids I put the pistols in a safe with a finger print id so I could get them fast if need be.
