Stocking trout from a plane:
Apparently is a popular way they do it in the mountain lakes. Kind of funny.

I have to wonder what the survival rate is for that method.

They say it's very high. They aren't going very fast and they're barely above the water. The trout are only 3-4" long and fall very slowly. Plus it would be impossible to stock the mountain lakes any other way.

Yea, just seems like 1/4 of them are going through the fins and tire on the bottom of the plane.

I'm sure it's not as high as straight out of a truck, but anything better than 75% would be pretty good.
Here's several videos about it:

Looks like they are a couple hundred feet high to me! You are right about no other way to stock those remote lakes though.

It's a GoPro. 20 yards looks like 200. They drop from just over tree height. 90mph and 150ft.
Here's the whole story:

Edit:
The trout are only about 1" long. So they will be hitting the water pretty slow and lightly. Over 85% survival rate.

You could drop a minnow from 4,000 ft and it wouldn't matter. Terminal velocity for something that small is pretty slow. Not like you or me jumping out with no parachute. Main thing is time out of water and overall stress to the fish during transport. The drop is the easy part.

Isn't this more like chumming from a plane?
