Some of you probably missed the new rule changes as well regarding the legal way to harvest your MS gator. After getting the gator up to the boat using a fly rod with #9 weight fly line and light leader, and snagging them with a single barb bead headed wooly bugger, you must either use a spear or bowie knife now to finish them off ---- no wimpy firearm or stickgun.

Good luck out there. Hunt hard, hunt safe, and make it a fair chase for the gators.

Don't like this one bit, and it would produce more pushback than anything I've heard. What if they have a boat they can use not titled in their name? Then if you allow people to enter using other people's boat registration, what stops them from using every ski boat registration they've got between them and their friends.

Just thinking ahead, to solve my hypothetical above, mdwfp issues the permit only good to be used n the boat it was entered with. Then the afternoon of the first hunt the outboard throws a rod or the hull cracks. Cant we just use our backup boat owned by our pal Steve? Nope.

Tons of people successfully hunt every year who are not boat owners.

Ok so maybe one or two at best out of all the tags would have a shatty day and blow their motor up on first day entering water. Your the first person who has disagreed with this concept and thats ok because everyone is entitled to the opinion, but trust me i know plenty of people who get one and then go around searching for someone with a boat to take them. Ok, so they find a boat, big deal. Then comes the part where you need atleast $500 in gear to be successful as well and most dont have that either if they dont have a boat in the first place and not everyone who has a boat has gator hunting gear. The ones who have a good boat and thousands wrapped up in hunting gear and love the sport should get a chance regardless is what im getting at. Like i said before i could give a rats as about gator hunting anymore anyways, so thats my .02 and im gonna leave it at that.

Fair enough, but here's why I like my system better:

I don't think near as many folks, if any, would enter a draw that costs $183 if they don't already have at least some type of plan that would allow them to use their tags. It accomplishes the same thing without excluding the honest fella who doesn't have a boat but has the ability to use one.

I don't know how your luck runs with boats GrizwalD, but if it's half as bad as mine it'd be me and you sitting at the boat ramp.

The quota system Arkansas uses on their bear hunts works great. You buy your license(out of State is $350) and hunt. If you harvest a bear, you have till like 9 pm to report it. After check-in time, you can call their hotline number and see how many is left on the quota. If there are only 5 tag left, everyone eligible can still hunt the entire next day....they don't end it in the middle of hunting if 5 people check bears in. Three years ago, they had like 11 bears left after the 6th day. On the 7th day they had over 20 killed, no one was in trouble and the season was over. Two years ago, they never reach their quota. Last year, it took almost the whole season to reach the quota. It's not a "mad dash".

I do not agree with using a boat registration as part of the process. I have a 1236 boat that I use for pond hopping, but it is not suitable for gator hunting. Someone could go register a one-man boat just to be eligible.

This is my first year to get a tag. Some people are acting like it's a crime that got a tag and they didn't since I don't have gear or a big booty boat. I can buy the gear. I'm not as privilege as some of y'all to have been drawn every year. I did enter the drawing two years, but never got drawn. For people whining/disappointed....if they really like gator hunting as much as they claim, should be offering their experience and/or gear to others instead of just saying F--- IT.

an easy way for everyone to get a tag to hunt gators is for mdwfp issue 2 tags to everyone with a sportsmans license if they want to hunt they have tags if they don't want to hunt turn there tags back in and have those on a first come basis and you pay for the used tags at check in

I think they need to allow residents of a particular zone have first dibs on the tags for said zone

in all seriousness, the entire deal has been screwed up. From the hundreds who applied for years never to be drawn, while seeing others be drawn every year, to MDWFP not reading their own damn instructions this year and forgetting to set up one of the hyperlinks where they said to click, so hundreds were attempting to buy tags with busted ass website. I'm still not sure what the problem is with a progressive or preference point system, especially when everyone in the state is wanting to go to 3-4 particular zones.
