The largest, most productive and most unexploited pubic waterfowl huntinmg available, especially when the stages're right. But crowds are consistently absent on the river for a reason.

Relax guys, if I thought I was putting myself out of a hunting spot, I wouldn't give specifics. The truth is when most people try to hunt the river they seem to hunt with a 'small water' mentality and they usually have a lousy hunt.

The best time to hunt the river is when the wind gets up to about 25 or 30 MPH out of the South and hits that current coming in a torrent due south. The breakers will swamp most boats smaller than a small barge. I have seen 15' swells with breakers on top resulting from the above situation plus two tows (one going north and the other south) and nowhere to hide. "The question is, is it worth it? Well is it Punk?"

On average we probably pull two or three "floating deceased" a year out of it in Vicksburg alone, and probably have another 6 or 8 un-recovered every year (suicide jumpers/boating accidents mostly), and that is just the local cases. That is why I don't care how big the hunting boat is I am staying off of the big muddy.

VICKSBURGBOB, I live in vicksburg and i hunt the river. I've ne never heard of any duck hunters dying on the river. Do you really pull 2-3 hunters out of the river a year? it is a large body of water and it can get treacherous in no time. However, if you respect it and don't act a fool it isn't that bad. The barges are more dangerous than anything. they can really throw some big swells, especially the north-bound ones carrying a big load. Even in the daylight they are SOOOOOO aggravating.

I didn't say hunters, although we do lose hunters every year in the area in boats on private ponds, or in eddies near or on the river itself. as I said before, the majority of those lost in the river are rarely recovered, and not many of those make the paper current is to fast and the undercurrent too strong. Anyone who does hunt the river needs to be sure to follow safety precautions especially with regards to flotation vests and safe boating procedures because once you are actually in the big muddy it is a little too late to wish you had remembered to put on your vest. I just worry about you guys on the river because alot of the folks who go out there don't respect how dangerous it is nearly enough.

Well, looks like we will get another chance to hunt the river with at least decent water levels. Maybe this will pull some birds from Desoto lake area down this way. Here's hoping :D

There was a lot of shooting on Desoto Lake this past weekend.

I have spent a lot of time on that river fishing when it is warm and I stay nervous the whole time then. No worry about me being on the river at dark, in the fog, or when it is cold. I just can't enjoy a hunt like that. Good luck and be respectful of the river!!!

Looks like Ms.River should go to 35-36' greenville gauge by tuesday or wednesday. Maybe even higher with these storms training north along the Ms river valley. Here's hoping!
