Fluckem. I'm sticking with Van's. It's on the other side of the world but I guess that is where I'll go. I liked the hell out of Mean Mallet. Ever since it was overthere by Mc B's.

I already try and spend as little as possible at Bass Pro.

not sure where everyone has this bad opinion of big bucks....... i know the guy that runs the ship and several that have worked there over the years. Is it strictly a hunting store ? no, but the had to cater to where their business came from (ie. not nearly as many duck hunters in hattiesburg as there are in jackson). They tried to help out a lot of college kids at USM during their stay in hat, giving them jobs, they don't know everything about everything, but there is generally a manager or two in the store that does. As far as pricing, i've never seen anything in big buck that made me cringe as far as price. Are they as cheap as bass pro? no, but there again, no local store is. All of this about it going to chit, etc. is BS as far as i'm concerned, especially if the same people are going to be running the store.

Damn_It_Boy wrote:Don't worry guys.......Van's will keep them in check price wise, or they will go out of business quickly. Best kept secret was that MM would also come within $10 of any gun than Van's sold....hell, what's 10 bucks for the time driving and gas? Chris did a great job with the store compared to the previous diack head owners than ran it when it was on Old Canton Rd. I think the new store will be better than most expect. Don't forget, he also has to compete with Vans, Academy Sports, Bass Pro Shops, Wally World, and a few others in the area. I expect great prices as they will now have more buying power with 2 stores and possibly more. I think it's a win win.

I have heard that Dick's sporting Goods is coming to flowood and Gander Mountain owns property in Madison. Could be suicide.

Gander Mtn stores SUCK!!! They have an awesome selection of a lot of stuff. Ammo and gun selection is great. But it is priced higher than a giraffe's butt.

Dicks Sporting Goods is ok. I got a GREAT deal on an over/under shotgun when Dicks bought out Galyans in Birmingham.

Cabelas is a cool store too. I bought some everyday work clothes there when I went to the one in Baton Rouge.

I don't think Jackson can support all these stores. Especially with the economy being what it is. I know my personal economy SUX and from what I hear a lot of folks are having money problems right now.

Yeah, the joke was there's Big Buck's and there's Mega Bucks (Gander Mtn).

I went to the Hunter's Warehouse up in Southaven for the first time this Spring. Now THAT is what Jackson needs and it needs to be built right next to Bass Pro. The prices were comparable to Academy and it had the largest overall selection of hunting equipment I've seen.

On the way to the MSU-Clemson Super Regional last year, a former Jackon city council president said something to the effect that if you figured a 20 or 30 mile radius from the governor's mansion and calculated average household income within that circle that it ranked very, very high nationally. That kind of average household income, in a state where hunting and fishing are primary activities, throw in I-20 and I-55 for good measure, you gotta figure sporting goods retailers are at least looking. I don't know anything about Big Bucks, but located in Madison County, where there are at least 5 or 6 select baseball teams in teh 10 years old age class, seems to me that their team sports sales will be good. I'll bet they'll sell a heckuva lot more baseball equipment than, say, high-end trout fishing tackle.

cabelas isn't coming to the madison area. They have pulled out. Big Bucks is going to find out real quick that this market is over loaded in the hunting stores in the metro jackson area. Their main focus is going to be the team sports...
