Ok, here is the story for everyone. Didn't have time to post it up yesterday.
We've had this place for a couple years, hunted it hard and have never been able to close the deal on a good deer. I always knew the first big deer I shot on this place would have some crazy story behind it because I could never see one out of the stand. Had pictures of monsters, but no sightings. Well we have a duck hole out in the middle of the place that is an afternoon spot and is surrounded by CRP. About three years ago, I started straping on the orange and carrying a gun to the edge of the hole in case I jumped one walking in. Once I get to the hole, I'd leave all that crap on the dry ground and get after the ducks. Well Friday I wanted to hang a camera over a scrap I had found a week or two ago, so I told my dad and waterfowlwidowmaker i'd meet them at the hole and to run something by me. Well they did, but it was a spike. So I ease on back to the back of the property and hang my camera. On the way back to the duck hole, instead of walking the road I decided I'd walk parallel down the duck field through the CRP just incase. So 20 yards from the edge of the duck field, I cut up into the CRP. I didn't get 5 steps in and this dude jumped up with a doe. I'd already walked right by this deer maybe 30 yards away from him and he was laid up 40 yards from my tripod. Well back to the story, he jumped up, I saw he was a shooter, and shouldered the gun. Well being he was 15 yards from me when he jumped there wasn't any of that standing up and looking for what spooked him. When he stood up, he took off! So I shouldered the gun and started tracking. At somewhere around 50 yards I felt I was on him and pulled the trigger and the gun didn't go off. I had lent out my smoke pole and was using my dad's 45/70 i had never shot before and had forgot to co ck the hammer. So I pulled it back and got back to tracking him running full blast through the 10 year old CRP. By this time I'm only seeing glimps of him and at somewhere around 100 yards I got a shot at him and fired one off. So now I'm thinking to myself, "you just blew that Wayne, real nice...." I just knew I missed, but went to check it out anyway. When I start getting to the area I had at shot him, I see grass moving! So I run up there and find him on his front two legs trying to get up. My first shot had hit him square in the hind quarters and took out him back running gear (lucky as all get out i actually hit him...) So I walk up there to stick the gun behind his shoulder and finish him off, when this big mean sucker turns on me! I fall down back peddling and he almost hooked me! So I decide to give the boy some room to finish him off and put one behing his shoulder from about 15 feet away. He's by far my best buck and I'm really proud of him even though I know he ain't the biggest on this place. I've never seen a deers neck this big. Widowmaker measured his neck at 30 inches! So anyway, all this happened around 3:15, I leave all my deer stuff by the deer and go get in the blind with dad and widowmaker and we picked up 6 mallards before shooting hours. Pretty good day.
