I remember David Harkins telling me about 5 years ago that if water ever got in his cabin that Cleveland better watch out because the levee was suspected to break at that point.

He has a beautiful place
deltadukman wrote:Wow! I know that for the old Harkins cabin to get water, its high. How is his new place fairing? Maybe skillethead can tell us.

Those pics of merigold hurt my soul. I can remember going into some of those old cabins when I was no taller than a knee boot. Danny lyons, jimmy house, jimmy (mike) sanders, Peambles when it still belonged to mr smith, henry hiters old place behind the skinning shed. I killed my first deer over there and the had an old black river rat named abraham dkin a deer in ten mins for $10. Alot of those old places will just be memories now.
Hate it for yall deltaquack, heck I even ran all the wiring in david earls old cabin, I think its john dentons now. Lot of memories over there.

I've seen the Miller Point pics...unreal.
Have heard from several individuals over the last day that all of the cabins, even the ones not flooded to the roof, will have to be torn down due to biohazard concerns. The weather channel stated that the water in Memphis was registering 2000% higher e coli that is normal. Moreover the mold, fungus, not to mention critters, will be bad enough that (from what I am now being told) just about every structure behind the levee receiving water will have to be torn down. I cannot imagine the millions of dollars and memories that are being destroyed right now. Really sad times.

One of the sewage treatment plants in Memphis failed and was pumping raw sewage from what i understand. However, i imagine it would be pretty diluted by the time it gets to coahoma county on south, especially after it hits the water from the White and Arkansas. The folks with plenty of cash may tear down and rebuild, but a lot of them will just continue business as usual as long as their is still a cabin left. Replace the floor, insulation, and clorox the hell out of it and your good to go!

I would like to share a piece of advice about addressing mold, mildew, and dealing with this flood. Since we flooded last year, this stuff is fresh in my heart and memory. My heart literally aches for everyone who is being affected by this.
- Rip out drywall, flooring, etc. ASAP! Wicking happens quickly up walls, through floor joists, etc.
- Don't try to clean out your flooded AC unit and ductwork. There is a ton of contamination in the system that will be pumped back into your house. also, the unit may be damaged and could short out. Rip it out and replace it.
- Do NOT use bleach to deal with mold and mildew!!!!! Lots of discussion can be had on this subject but use Microban or the other product they sell at The Home Depot.
- Go buy clean-up supplies now. Stuff may already be cleaned out of nearby stores.
- Go get as many fans as you can lay your hands on and get them running inside your home and underneath the crawlspace.
- Get your hands on one or multiple dehumidifiers. These will be needed inside your home and underneath the crawlspace.
- Get a tetanus shot and the first of your Hepatitis A shots.
- Buy good masks and even respirators when underneath your house or in really "funky" areas. You will be spending a lot of time in these areas so protect yourself.
- If you are not flooded, then please go find someone who is and lend a hand. Don't walk in and ask what you can help them do because folks will be so shell-shocked and in bad emotional state that they really won't know how to direct you. Find something that needs to be done and just start doing it.
- Take lots of demo tools with you if you are going in to help. Make sure you put your name and phone number on any tool that you want to have a chance at ever seeing again.
- Pack up homemade sack lunches, fill colors will cold drinks and popsicles, and then just find an area that has been affected and hand out food and drinks with a smile. This sounds insignificant, but I can recall taking a break from ripping ductwork out from underneath my house and sitting on my front steps, eating a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant/Oreos/apple that a Mom and her girls made and brought around on a wagon. I am not ashamed to admit I almost cried when they brought that by and offered it to me.
- Take your kids with you (to areas that you feel are reasonably safe, of course) and let them help demo, carry trash, or do whatever to help. I saw teenagers doing some amazing things last year, and my kids will always remember what others did for us. A friend of mine is in the Nel-Win Camp at the Tunica Cutoff and sent me a picture today of his place that is flooded. Our family discussed that I will likely head down that way when the water goes down to help him clean up. My 5 and 10 year old sons quickly volunteered and said they planned to go with me. Though this may not be the time or place to take these boys, my wife and I are touched of their willingness to want to help--a direct result of what they saw others do for us.
- Load up your vehicle with all the heavy duty bags, brooms, cleaning supplies, fans, extension cords, etc. that you can think of and hand these out to folks who are in the middle of cleaning up. Most folks probably won't have any of this initially and will appreciate the supplies.
- If you are in a neighborhood with lots of affected homes, then set up a "command tent/mess hall" as a rally point and HQ. Have white boards set up with plenty of pens and space for people to write down who needs what help and when. Have folks with radios, 4-wheelers, golf carts, Rhinos, whatever who will serve as the coordinators for assistance. Make sure there are people actively going to every house that is or may be affected to ask people if they need help. It broke my heart to hear about a retired couple in our neighborhood who never asked for help even though they were flooded and who sat in a flooded house essentially immobilized because of shock, sadness, or whatever. A neighbor was walking down the street and happened to hear crying on the back porch as these folks just didn't know what to do. The troops were rallied (a couple of dozen of them!) and flooring, drywall, furniture, etc. was pulled up, out, and away that day. Remember that there are a lot of folks who just won't ask for help--not that most are too proud, it's just that some folks aren't wired that way. For 2-3 weeks, the affected families and the volunteers ate lunch and dinner at our "mess tent" (~300 people). We laughed, we cried, we told stories, we ate the wonderful food that volunteers from our neighborhood, adjacent neighborhoods, restaurants, and no telling who else prepared and served. The true sense of "community" during our gatherings was invaluable and kept folks encouraged. Many new friendships were made during those difficult days, and I truly thank the Lord for so many new friends who gave of their time and energy to help those affected.
- If you know of anyone who has access to a dumpster service and who can regularly provide them (and unload them on a daily basis), then grab that person and get as many dumpsters lined up as you possibly can!!!! You will need to load and unload dumpsters to keep your yard, neighborhood, area from becoming a landfill with all the problems a landfill has. We had some folks with some wisdom who realized this early on so we had dumpsters that were well used.
Sorry for the rambling email. This stuff hits close to my heart, and I must confess to having tears in my eyes while typing. God bless all those affected and all those who are and will be lending a hand.

we came back I-10West to I-55 just after noon today and i was absolutely amazed at the force and turbulence of the water that was rushing under I-10 close to hammond!
is the gate opening going to affect any of you guys or are you more west of the projected flood zone? some of the predictions are unbelievable...towns under 25 feet of floodwater.

You are talking about water from the BC spillway?
