Im knocking on 30 and can remember filling up at $0.90 cents a gallon. That wasnt that long ago. I miss the old radial crop dusters. Could hear them a mile away. There are still a few radials flying but not many.

reminds me of marathon bars - haven't thought of those in years.....

-green yellow and red(?) striped coconut planks (YUCK - forced to eat them as a kid by my grandmother "'cause they were good for me")
-catching >5lb catfish out of fish ponds, on a regular basis
-having to put "salve" on any scrapes, cuts, strawberries...that burned like the dickens - at my grandparent's again
-picking blackberries on the fishpond levees in the morning and fresh blackberry cobbler that afternoon
-sitting on the plastic couch cover at my grandparent's, with a starburst pattern embeddin in it (same pattern was on the seat cover in the back of their crystler, that i used to stick to in the summer)
-three wheelers w/only suspension being how much air you let out of the balloon tires
-stopping outside of tutwiler (i think, may've been ruleville), on the way to rome to "visit", to pick up fresh eggs
-barely remember when every store on mainstreet isola was occupied and thriving - the cafe, mr tingle's antique shop, insurance co, drug store, clothes shop, 2 chinese groceries and bissey's grocery, full serve gas station, gresham's gas/tires, baseball field was used on a regular basis, conagra was in the back of the old school building (where water tower is, now)
Experience is a freakin' awesome teacher...

Goin' on deer drives with 50+ standers and ten packs of dogs and counting over a hundred shots during doe days. Taking longer to get through the swamp bottoms(gettin' bad stuck) than the drive would last. Killin' ducks in the timber shootin' 1950's A5 Browning loaded with paper hull super x's in four shot. Following my dad's bird dogs quail huntin' and actually killin' a limit of wild birds. Cuttin' wood for the fireplace with an old heavy-ass gear drive homelite chainsaw. Goin' squirrel huntin' at daylight and givin' a few to the black folks who actually appreciated them. Pickin' butter beans and having to shell them by hand.

I'll be 30 in March and I remember filling up my truck that had a 34 gallon tank for 25 bucks at $0.77 to $0.79 a gallon my senior year in high school.

Not much sadder to me than the loss of the quail hunting. Used to get off the school bus and walk up two coveys before dark; Saturdays we'd walk all day and the men would shoot a limit each; us boys would shoot a lot of shells.

Back then we'd tell our buddies if we saw a deer track, now we dodge deer in the road and tell our buddies if we saw a pair of bobwhites. Back then, you'd invite neighbors to come eat a mess of birds, now if you have a few quaily birds to eat you draw the curtains and turn the lights down low.....

.....Nope, You thought you were "The Man" when you got your first Leisure Suit, parted your hair down the middle, and went cruising in the 1972 Olds Cutless Supreme, with the 350 4-barrel,,,doing the loop around McDonalds--"pass another Pony up here"

I learned to shoot a shotgun hunting wild quail and doves with my dad and grandaddy. If the quail hunting would come back i could sell all the decoys and deer stands and be proud to do so.

getting up to pick bush butter beans
seeing my daddy sweat so hard it would drip off his nose...and dying to be "a man" like him
splitting wood with an slege hammer and wedge
seeing all the ladies come over to our house and see this contraption that would cook a chicken in 10 minutes.....a microwave. Mom had the 1st one in the neigborhood!
working in a hay field in August
riding bikes in the "gravel pit" and occasionally finding a Playboy lying around
playing pong and duck hunt on the Atari
listening to Bill Cosby and Jerry Clower 8 tracks
playing kickball and football in the yard
riding a Big Wheel and later a Green Machine
eating grandma's cooking...especially fried chicken and mac-n-cheese
riding a 10 speed with the curled handle bars
shooting squirrels and having grandma cook em up with dumplins!
