cwinkler,
A very high percentage (over 50% has been pretty well established) of the birds killed in that region in dry fields would not have been killed without a spinner. That's a fact that anyone who has hunted the area for any amount to time will admit. This is a device that is causing ducks to come to the guns in places they never would otherwise, and they're doing it in large numbers.
The flipside of the kill total is the number of "hunter encounters" the birds experience. We're talking about HUGE flocks of mallards diving into the hole. Sure you can kill ducks in a dry field up north without one, but you can't do it like you can with a spinner. Not even close.
If I could take every hunter from this part of the world to North Dakota or Saskatchewan for a couple of days there would be a march on Washington like you've never seen.

What he said! Bill made points based on facts, pure and simple. Yes, we can kill our limits but the biggest effect on the population is how we do it and educating the birds the length of the flyway to avoid decoys will come back to bite us. The ducks' haunts and habits are being altered and the stress rate for them is rising.
Fellas, we're not talking about Mathews Brake or the Scatters, we're talking about the big picture here. We need to get behind this. The future is at stake. I leave for Canada next week. We'll do well, but will do so w/o spinners.

Guys read the post real close from Double R and The Waterfowler.
This thread isnt about bashing someone who uses spinners.......its not.
It about the effect it is having on the ducks, and the pop. If you cant read those two post and understand what is going then you do not care about the sport.
Ramsey and I spoke in depth on this issue last night, those post should make a light bulb turn on in yalls hard heads...........
Gator and Gordon good read on yalls part.
And Gordon we still love you..........................................

I understand the effect it has on the population, but my point is it is not the spinner that is killing the ducks. Unless the accidentally fly into the rotating wings. It is the hunter that is pulling the trigger that is killing the ducks. You can ban the mojo's but that will only temporarly fix the problem until they come out with a new gadget. You have to change the heart and minds of the hunters to fix the problem.
So if they Ban them.. That is fine with me.. I don't use one anyway, but the ban only temporarily fixes the problem.

Good post Double R and The Waterfowler,
It's sad that it took all these years for many to start seeing it for what it was.
I can remember on this very forum being hammered for my strong objections to the use of these devices. That is my fault because I couldn't get the message across without sounding like I was preaching. The first time I ever got in a blind with one and saw the affect it had on the birds I knew it was a bad thing.
In those days I spoke my mind and in doing so alienated many against me as the poster and lost what the intended post message was trying to say.
I failed miserably in enlighten people on what this was doing to our resource. I watch over the next few years and what was duck hunting took on another face and became something totally different than what it was.
I blamed it on Generation X and my Generation for not educating the next. I blame it on the hunters themselves as they continued to look for easier ways to kill without having to learn the art that created the heritage to begin with. Very sad indeed. Now I waterfowl hunt when the weather/conditions allow and chase other game the rest of the time. I don't want to remember waterfowl hunting for what it is now; I want to remember the days in the field prior to Spinners. The day when men, young and old were required to learn technique in order to harvest these great creatures, it had meaning outside the simple kill. It required skill and years of experience to learn just what works and what doesn't. It was a day when men valued the chase as much as the end result and sometimes more.
There are probably several things that have changed the imprinted fall flights to the south but I will tell you just as I have from the very beginning that these spinning wing devices are exactly what caused the change we now see in duck hunting. They are a major contributor to the change in flights and the birds making the flights. People who promoted the devices like Whistling wings, and Duck commander have affected the sport with promoting these devices and thus created what we have today. Now they want to grown their own and release them to shoot. Yeah that is what duck hunting has turned to.
I thank God every year for allowing me to have been a part of the old days.

Your right.. And guns don't kill people either..
It's not that I disagree with banning them. I just don't think they are the root of the problem. Just like guns are not the root of gun violence..

Great posts Gator, RR, Waterfowler, GG, and Cooksey. Thanks for putting some numbers out there to show the effect of spinners up north.
I was talking to someone very recently on this topic and he said that he had read a study that had been done that showed that 4 out of 6 ducks killed over a spinner were juvies while only 2 of 6 killed without a spinner was a juvie.
I would love to get my hands on this study because if this is true, then there is scientific evidence that more juvies are being killed, which WILL have a huge adverse effect on the population over many years.

Well Mr. Cooksey,
You list your occupation Dir. of Media or some such for Avery. Why do the people who do those hunting shows have spinners in every episoid? Your company and others ought to take a stand and not sponsor the shows that "insist" on using them. Jackleg Jim the Topwater sees the show and figures he HAS to have one to do it right.

Mojo was the major sponsor in getting that video production started. That's why Echo used them.
