Speaking of Snakes...
Re: Speaking of Snakes...
Well seeing as how everyone is so scared of snakes just take a look at the following: Every year in the United States these figures are averages compiled by the U.S.Justice.
42,000 plus people die each year in auto accidents
20,000 people die each year from the common flu
120 people die each year from airplane accidents
90 people die each year from being struck by lightning
12 people die each year from snakebites
5 people die each year from Anthrax poisining.
This means you are more than 3500 times more likely to die in an auto accident.
1667 times more likely to die from the common flu!
10 times more likely to die in a plane crash
7.5 times more likely to be killed by lightning!
Now this is just the actual deaths not the number of times they happen. There are more than 6.5 million car crashes each year in the U.S. alone Also there are more than 8000 snakebites in the U.S. alone! This means that 1 out of every 667 snakebites is fatal in the whole U.S each year! But one out of every 155 car crashes result in a death!
Snakebites are about the least of your worries in life! The last report I saw in 2007 there had NEVER been a recorded death from a snakebite in the state of Mississippi!

I believe this to be true, but there is that 1 and I be damned if it is gonna be me. Also there has been no "reported" deaths due to snake bites themselve. But there have been deaths due to snake bites, infection, bacterial problems. Even in Rattle snake bites, infection is more of a threat than the venom itself, to an adult.
Damn, i thought I had that one

Captivity=zoo, either that or some crazy Appalachai snake handling church.... Although I new a guy in school that had a rattlesnake he caught and kept as a pet. Got drunk one night, took it out and struck him on the forearm. Sick for two weeks, but no long term effects.jacksbuddy wrote:I hate to hijack the thread, but...How do they know this? I mean, really! What kind of person sees such a mean, dangerous, and deadly serpent like a cottonmouth, and decide that they want to take it home as a pet?edub20 wrote:water moccasin or cottonmouth, highly venomous snake.... was that at college station, here? we had a python (had to move when the neighbors found out) and heard about the guy with a rattlesnake as a pet, that struck him...had heard he was feeding and it mistook him for the mouse, but stories get wild when run through the grapevine, dealing with animals....
...yes, i can handle constictors, but snakes in the wild give me the willies.

we always wondered what the attraction was. yeah, it sounds cool, but at some point, the cage has gotta get cleaned out and that means dealing with the snake to get it out....
