If the biological data is free from politics and other outside influences ($$$), I'm all for keeping a 60 day season.
However, according to Bob Marshall, Outdoors Editor with The Times Picayune,
"The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has used a system known as Adaptive Harvest Management to determine hunting regulations for the past eight years. Since its inception, the formula has allowed the liberal option each year. That has been a growing source of controversy the past three years as many waterfowlers have reported seeing fewer ducks"
and
"Two years ago, as dry conditions began to spread across the breeding grounds, threatening a drop in production, some state agencies were urging the Service to pass a rule that would prevent regulations from dropping more than one level in any year. Their fear was that dropping from 60 and six to 30 and three in one season might drive many hunters out of the sport."
Let's put the spot light on that last sentence: "Their fear was that dropping from 60 and six to 30 and three in one season might drive many hunters out of the sport."
Aaahhh yes, the almighty $$$ comes into play.
Po Monkey made a very good point though, the same large numbers of ducks could be heading south each year as always but the Yankees are killing them before they get here (a redistribution of the total harvest).
If so, it would be very selfish for those of us in the south to hope for a 30 day season so that more ducks could survive and make it down here for our shooting pleasure.
