Chevy Volt was named North America Car of the Year last year. It just got named European Car of the Year:

Yet, they had to shut down production for five weeks because inventory is really high and demand is weak. Seems like Americans want a car that runs on gasoline, not hope and dreams. So why is the volt getting all this love?

I'm sure the people that voted it car of the year are a bunch of green-weenies. Americans are not gonna pay 40k for an electric car. There's no market for it....but don't worry, Obama is creating a market for it by doing everything in his power to ensure gas prices stay ridiculously high. It's all in his plan.

I'm not sure who is in charge of R+D at some of these car manufacturers. People don't want a car that only goes 40 miles before you have to charge it or run on some complex second motor that is slow as a turtle. The car was absurdly expensive too. If you get a car that costs more than $30k, it better be a decent car. Not some crappy car with a complex engine set up. You can get a new Nissan Altima (or similar) that is loaded for the same price as a Volt that gets over 30mpg's. You can get a barely used Lexus for the price of a new crappy Volt that gets 30mpg. A Ford Focus gets close to 40mpgs, is about the same feel inside, and costs almost half! I know the Volt supposidly gets better than 30mpgs, but at least you can just get in these other cars and go. Fill them up occasionally, and just drive not having to worry about the multiple batteries the car has or the electric engine, generator, or all the other non-sense. I can list 100 cars I would get before a Volt in that price range. Add on the fact that it cost tax payers a forture to fund this B.S. project. GM is going to have to give me a car before I own another one.

The battery life on these cars is way less than the life of the car as well, and cost more to replace than you could possibly save on fuel in the same amount of time. We did the math on it the other day, using something like $4.50/gal for gas. I don't remember exactly how it worked out, but if you bought a Volt today it would cost you more in the long run than if you went out and bought a nice 3/4 ton truck today.

The media makes a self fulfilling prophecy for the public. They are doing everything they can to make general motors get back on it's feet. Because honestly there is not anything that special about that car. It doesn't get great gas mileage and the whole charge then drive thing would be ideal in a perfect world that you driven 5miles to work and 5 miles back. But who does that?

Retired people who live in golf course communities. But zero old people want a confusing, uncomfortable car.

If I wanted a subcompact hybrid or electric I would get a Prius. Much better vehicle.
Then again, my 268hp v6 Camry gets 32 mpg cruising 80 mph on the highway. I am happy with that.

My wife's Volkswagen jetta TDI gets 45mpg's cruising at 70. A prius might get a couple MPG's better in the city, but this Jetta will last longer, and will be waaay cheaper to maintain over the life of the vehicle.

Looking at your screen name, I never would have guessed you so strongly despised GM.

Heard yesterday they are going to be offering a 10,000 dollar tax rebate for the purchase of a new volt!
