Re: Ask ds--QUAIL
you can probably get plenty of advise on raising them...but getting flight conditioned birds that act any thing close to wild birds is another trick...along these lines, some of the best things I have seen are just regular feeders, bird seed, or grain..may have to mix in some flight pellets or gradually move them over to "seed" , so if they survive the hunt, they might make it in the wild, But mainly, food and water system needs to be low maintenance..ie the less they see humans ,the wilder they will act...one guy I heard of would take his dog in the pen with him (muzzle on the dog) any time he had to go in the pen in the day ( night trips they were usually huddled in a corner) but you could do the dog then too.. if they started acting tame. make sure the flight pen is where you can force them out in the weather (rain) (dew) to help flight condition the feathers... since very few breeders go to all this trouble we just started using a flush dog with the pointers, the Tamies might not run from your legs but they ain't hanging out with a Dogs Nose/mouth/teeth...that gave my retriever some extra fun,and we worked on "heel" "stay" "dead" a lot...Good Luck!

This website backyardchickens.com has a forum for quail and they also have people that you can buy from and lots of information on incubating them and what not.

My brother and I have been using a guy from Nesbit (just south of Memphis). His quail are by far the best if you are intrested in buying them to train a dog and shoot. They are always excedptional fliers, not like the tame birds that just jump in the air and let you smoke them. If you need his info give me a call 618-304-0856
