Reason I like metal roofs is you have a solid cover. A piece of single can pull up in high winds and create a leak in the roof. Metal roof in a light color reflects heat and is cooler than shingles that absorb heat.
No matter what roof you do, spend the money to put a Radiant Barrier down. Will make a difference in your cooling bill during the warm months.

architectural shingles are good for about 40 years. high winds don't seem to bother them like the light weight 3 tab shingles. Metal roofs are at least twice as expensive and require maintenance, unless you go with what is called a raised ridge seamless roof, then you are talking major bucks then it would be good for about 100 years, call roofing contractors and get you a cost comparison between the two, its shocking to say the least. We are roofing our pastors home and the contractor advised against using the metal roof.

+1, about the only thing else you need to ask yourself is how long do you plan on living in the house?

Screws are only warrantied for about 5 years on metal roof. 60 year on metal, and every 4-5 years you better change out your screws or the washers
will start leaking. Unless, like someone mentioned above, you go with the standing seam roof which the screws are covered and don't need maint.

OK, that I knew. Was wondering if there was something else that I didn't know.

Thats not at all accurate, if put down properly, with the proper components you will go 10-15+ years with out any maintenace, or any issues what so ever.
Metal roofs only cost more because most places charge more to put them down, and make alot more money on metal roofs. compare the materials, and it really doesn't cost much more to have a metal roof over a shingle roof. get a few quotes and
With shingles, they nail head are bad to pop out, alot better chance of this then there is a screw popping out.
This will cause the shingle to raise and the wind will catch it.

Just saying that the roofing contractor trying to honest, I feel, tells me that we (the church) couldn't really justify the cost difference in metal verus shingles plus the maintanence was good enough for me. Pastors roof with 36 squares of architectual shingles was 6500,,metal quote was like $15,000. I have seen some older metal roofs that had some age on them and have oxidized and need painting or at least cleaning.. If you were roofing a commerical building, absolutely go with the high grade metal with standing ridge.

My house was built in 1936 with a metal roof. It was built by the GOVT- CCC to be exact. Same roof still dry as a bone. I have lived in it since 1996.
Paint it every 12-15 years with silver paint. I would not own anything else. My previous house had shingles. In 5 years 3 storms did damage and the last one they had to replace the all the shingles.
More money to be sure. However, if you going to stay put for a good bit of time they are worth the money.
The tornados and hurricanes make them shingles come off like a sorority girl’s thong at a Frat party.

Metal roof hands down. You will never get the life out of an asphalt shingle roof that you will a metal roof. Just make sure you go with 26 ga. or heavier.
