Going to put a window A/C in my shop. 24x24x9' ceiling, insulated. All the online calculators tell me I need like 14000 BTU, but I don't stay out there for days on end, just want to make it comfortable to work in on summer evenings. I found a 6300 BTU on craigslist for cheap; will that get it done?
My pa-in-law's shop is about twice the size; he has a 23000 BTU and on low it will freeze you out of there.

If the numbers say 14,000 Go 18,000 just for some extra coverage

With that size I would go 18,000 better to have it to big then not big enough.

Go with the recommended or, as mentioned, bigger.
When you walk into the shop to start working, do you want to wait until the job is finished for the shop to be cool? If so, then why even install a A/C unit? Get my point?
When you walk in and turn the unit on, within a few minutes, you want to feel comfortable. It takes the recommended unit to achieve that.
