Huntley Ritter and Mike Checkett kick off another action packed season in 2012 with a stop in the Ocean State for their first sea duck hunts. Capt. Brian “Swampers” Rhodes, Avery prostaffer, videographer, DU member and commercial guide quickly gets the guys into some fast action for common eiders and scoters as the wave’s crash along the coastal islands. The DUTV crew also visits DU costal habitat projects to see how habitat programs along the eastern seaboard are benefiting waterfowl and hunters alike.

Coastal Rhode Island holds thousands of wintering Eider and Scoter often with less hunting pressure than more traditional sea duck hunting states. The 15 species of waterfowl known as sea ducks constitute 42 percent of all duck species breeding in North America. And yet, sea ducks are the least understood of all waterfowl. Basic natural history information is lacking for many species, and few reliable population indices or survival estimates exist. To answer some of these questions, DU has joined the Sea Duck Joint Venture in a large-scale, multiyear collaborative research project using satellite telemetry on black scoters, surf scoters, white-winged scoters and long-tailed ducks wintering on East Coast waters.

On the ground DU’s conservation programs along the Atlantic Coast are working to restore salt marshes. The marshes are important for meeting the needs of migratory and wintering waterfowl. While in Rhode Island, Huntley and Mike visited the Mud and Cards Pond projects. Restoration efforts there involved replacing an old concrete culvert with modern culverts equipped with a water-control structure. The new structure allows the USFWS to better manage the open water and emergent marsh habitat for a variety of wildlife.
