Boy Winston county's economic outlook plummeted from the pre-recession era to 2010. 3 major plants closed down, and in a town so small a noticeable exodus of residents has occured in the last 6 years.
I didn't look at all of the counties, but in the several I did look at one thing that stands out as remarkable is almost every single one had a growth in government and government "enterprises”, irregardless of whether or not their RGP went up or down. I guess we can only speculate for now whether or not these are local, state or federal enterprises, government handouts or simply the expansion of government in correlation with the expansion of the population. This would be hard to argue though, as Winston county lost residents, but government went up.
Let's see here... unemployment and prosperity, as a whole plummet, while government and government "enterprises" rise. Anyone see a correlation? I do remember posting a rant about government subsidies and how they make once private firms inefficient (how much… directly correlates to how much government culture is infused into the firm or either how big of a tit the firm is looking for) and having a few folks argue to their fullest that government subsidies and infusion into the market were good. NO form of government trying to be an "enterprise" is good. If Johnny the venture capitalist loses his booty we shake our heads and go on. If we have a beef plant fiasco, then we all pay. What's interesting, look at Neshoba county. No real changes high or low, nothing striking stands out. They really just strengthened the mean. But the number that is noticeable is the change in government and government enterprises. They dropped 8% . Why? I think it is because of what is on the chart that shows emerging and declining industries. If you look up the NAICS codes the emerging industries look far more prosperous than the declining industries. And if you look at the study as a whole, you see that prosperity and government growth don’t correlate very well.
The only “enterprising” the government needs to do are ones that insure future generations are left with an environment that is worth a damn, and ones that insure the federal government can crush another country who tries to kill us and take our sovereignty.
The only type of government enterprise that has any real interest in making money are government-sponsored enterprises, aka Fannie, Freddie and the soon-to-be-bubble meltdown, Sallie. We see how well the 2 formers have done. We will shortly see how well the latter will do. The government doesn't own them, per se. However their structure and their regulations are run by the feds, which is exactly what I was bitching about on the aforementioned rant. They are an inefficient, unprofitable, long chain of command, sorry excuse for an "enterprise." And companies that are heavily subsidized are quasi-businesses that suck just as bad at winning, but they have (or do they?) the never ending tit of the government to continue to "compete" with "independence."
The other form of government "enterprises" that are outright owned by the government, but are charged with providing services but getting revenue from other "independent" sources as well as the government are "enterprises" like:
-Public Broadcasting- does any small government fanatic need any explanation?
-Federal Prison Industries- for once the government is beginning to hand over their failure to the private market.
-TVA- looks good on paper, until you do some digging and realize that it crushed- and continues to crush- the private market in more ways than one could imagine if they weren't looking.
-Americorp- a noble idea, with the typical government problems. A government "enterprise" that is funded with taxpayer dollars as well as a few independent dollars, to fix problems that other taxpayer- funded programs created.
-Amtrak- Obamas favorite other than “uhhh.”
Local and state enterprises can fail just as bad. If they do it may only bring down a few million or few hundred people instead of 300 million. But what's 299,999,999 matter, when the one that is dragged down because of their misuse of tax money is YOU.
Germans didn't see the writing between the lines with Hitler. This small (easy for me to say) study by MSU shows that if nothing else, the government is competing just fine while everyone else is the opposite.
