Take a few minutes to read this

Please take a few minutes to read this blog entry. The blog was written on July 17th by Sgt Eric Williams, Flight medic C 3-82. I replaced Sgt Williams here in Afghansitan back in march and he moved to another base to work for the few months he had left in country. I worked with him for a couple weeks during the transition and he was a great guy.

He was killed in a mortar attack 23 July 2012 only 6 days after making this blog post.
He was only 2 hours away from catching a plane ride out of this country.

first of all, bless him for his service, and bless his family for their loss. it was disturbing to read, and as a civilian i'm disturbed to read that he felt so empty.

I really didn't get the feeling Eric was empty, he was a top notch flight medic and had seen way more than most ever will, I have to say alot of his blog I felt was spot on about the world today. Thanks for taking the time to read some of his final words.

I agree. He is spot on about this world. Most Americans choose to be ignorant about what goes on in the world and America for that matter in order to protect their ideas about what a perfect country we live in and that we are invincible to the horrors take place abroad. I think Obama has woken some of us up to how imperfect our government is and how easily it can be manipulated. I cringe every time I walk into a room and MTV or some reality show is on or I pull a People Magazine out of the mailbox. It frustrates me to no end to see how wrapped up we are in such trivial, mind numbing daily activities with all that is going on in our country right now. I am just as guilty as anyone else. Last night I was watch college football not the RNC. I think to some extent you have to drown it all out to keep your sanity, but we can't keep our heads in the clouds forever. Soon or later we will have to face the real reality.

Maybe I misspoke, my "empty" comment stemmed from the fact that he had a sense, or conveyed a hollowness, that the American people don't care. And while many do-I too think he was spot on about the vast majority of the public who could not find Afghanistan on a school globe, but can find damn sure find the Kardashians with the tv remote. I don't intent to speak negatively about the man in any way. Just a hard thing to read, and a very powerful reminder for all of us. My apologies if my remarks were taken in any other fashion except to have been humbled by his service and his writing.

He sounds like a really intelligent guy. Thought-provoking piece. I slightly disagree with his premise, though. My observation is that the United States is not devolving. We've always been a nation of self-serving people. That is capitalism. We are just angry because the rules have changed, things aren't as easy as they were, and we have our own shortsightedness to blame. When our fortune changes (and I do believe it eventually will) money cover it up. Thanks for sharing this with us.
