I talked to a friend yesterday that has a lease somewhere in the delta or in east Ark. They have enough members that they have a daily draw for blinds. Seems the system has worked well for several years.
This year there is not water on the whole lease so several blinds or pits are dry. They are hammering them on the places with water, but where there is no water it is pass shooting high ducks at best. Opener, he got a good draw and did well. This weekend, bad draw and just came home.
They have an agreement in the lease for water to be pumped and the whole lease to be wet. Not happening this year. I have read of this happening many times and the farmer or land owner complaining about the cost of fuel, electricity etc. maybe a shake down for more $.
Problem as I see it is that there are a dozen other guys ready to jump in if the current guys leave the lease and the land owner knows it.
Any suggestions for these guys from some who have “ been there, done that”?

If they have a contract stating that there is guaranteed water, even if it has to be pumped then it time to break out the contract. If they don't have a contract then they just learned a good lesson on why they should have a contract instead of a handshake.

As far as the other group wanting to jump in, I wouldn't give them the chance Leases are hard enough to come by as it is. The money is already gone if they've paid and your not gonna find another lease this time of year. Its gonna rain sooner or later and provide water to some low spots.

If the landowner "wants" them there and the old leasees gone, then he can make their season pretty intolerable, but if its just a money issue and not a personal issue then they may be putting up more money next year.

Just reread your post and saw where the lease said it would have water. Time to hold his feet to the fire, for this season anyway. He may not lease it back to you next year, but that may be his intent anyhow.

If he wanted more cash for this year then he should have told them up front, not after some other group came along probably offering more.

No easy solution here and you don't want to damage the relationship. So, you gotta figure out what accomplishes what you need accomplished without making the ole farmer mad. Good luck with this one

IF water is in the agreement, and the farmer is not going to pump, then it says alot about the type of person he is.

an agreement is and agreement. if he will not stand behind his word, then i wouldn't want to do much buisness with him any way.

I would talk with him and remind him of the agreement and contract. If I wanted it for next year and beyond, renegotiate the lease and make sure he understands it. I would also offer to pay for some to half of fuel costs for this year.

It's not an easy place to be.

Offer to go 50% on the fuel to pump. If that does not work, realize that there is a reason you reduce agreements to writing. If the person you made the agreement with is not going to honor the agreement, do you really want to keep doing business with them?

+1 Offer to pay some of the fuel cost, surely yall can work something out that will get you the water you want and help the owner/farmer out.

Some places are so good when there is water, its not worth giving up in the event there is no water.

Don't do anything Rain is on the way!!! Everybody always gets their panties in a wad at the first of the season. I would not pizz the land owner or farmer off.

Part of our property has had too much water if you can believe that. Neighboring farms who lost water or who pumped with leaks have had us with some deeper water than preferred. On the other hand, large majority of our land is till relatively dry. We just put some boards in last night. Rain solves a lot of problems and $$$. Patience is a virtue.

Wishful thinking. Looks like a very dry year so far. Could it change? Sure, but doubtful.
