Another Handgun Question

Postby bigoak » Wed Jan 16, 2013 1:50 pm

What would be a good medium sized revolver? Don't have a lot of experience with handguns so I thought I would start out with a revolver. Want something with a little more punch than a 22. Was thinking about getting a 38. Not gonna be a conceal carry gun. Just a home defense/carry in the truck gun. Anyone got a favorite revolver that you would recommend?

Smith & Wesson hammerless .38. With +p ammo it packs a punch.

Smith 442 or 642, if you are on a tight budget look at a Rossi in 38 special or 357. Remember you can shoot 38 out of a 357.

Yea the Rossi would be a good fit and will be a heck of alot cheaper. It'll still go "bang" everytime. Great choice for a bedside/truck gun.

Big oak if you live in the Jackson area I have a Taurus in 357 if you would like to shoot one before you purchase I would go with the 357 for the ammo option.

Just my opinion, but I would stay away from small "J" frame revolvers as a first handgun purchase. They seem easy to work with, but in reality they are some of the most unpleasant guns to shoot. I would suggest you get a longer barrel revolver that is more pleasurable to practice with. I have many handguns from j frame S&W all the way up to a a .44 Magnum Cattleman and of all the guns I have the snubnose .38 is my least favorite to go plinking with.

IMO, you shouldn't have a gun if you aren't willing to go out and get proficient with it. Get something that you will enjoy shooting.

Thanks for all suggestions and offers to test shoot. I have a little experience shooting handguns so it will not be totally new for me. I am going to go shopping this weekend and decide on something.

Get you a 357 revolver with a 4 inch barrel and start with 38's. I miss my Colt Trooper I had with a 4 inch barrel.
