Hey everybody. I been reading these forums for a while now, but I have just recently registered. I bought a new call a while back and it has sounded great while practicing at the house. Went hunting Saturday morning and I was "warming up" in the truck on the way to our hole. It started this AWFUL squealing sound and was very hard to blow. I blew it for several minutes and it sounded normal. I get to the duckhole and just at daylight a group of mallards passed over so I decided to try it. It happened again. Same awful sound and hard to blow. Needless to say I had to bring out the old Yetzen to pull em' back in.

Maybe your reed is sticking? Try rubbing some paste wax on the soundboard under the reed. Good luck!

DDH: FYI I know how to blow a duck call and the ducks seem to think so too. [img]images/smiles/icon_wink.gif[/img] Thats all that matters right? After struggling to take it apart it seems the reed was covered in brown sticky residue and was sticking. Cleaned it up and it sounds fine. Never had this problem out of my Commander In Chief,Haydel,or Yetzen. I won't ever drink cokes and blow this call again.

Sounds like the reed is sticking, to prevent this clean your call after every hunt (avoid bending the reed)and rub some vasalean or chap-stick on the reed before the hunt.

Well, we could ALL speculate on what the problem is......and even lay blame on the call, itself.....but that's wouldn't be very fair to Greg Hood. He makes some fine calls....some folks can blow'em....some can't. Give him a call or e-mail him......if anybody can help you, he'd be my first recommendation. He'll be glad to help you AND he'll make you a better duck caller in the process. If he's not out hunting right now, he'll answer the phone. i got 5 of them and if you can tune a call and blow one it is the best thing in the world. the problem w/ alot of peoples call is the taking them apart or so called tuning them. these calls come pre tuned so leave it alone unless you know what you are doing!!!

I was not laying blame on the call or saying it is a bad call. Those were not my intentions. The reed was sticking, as alot of them do occasionally. Mr. Hood and I swapped e-mails a week or two prior to my purchasing of the call on some questions I had about it. As a matter of fact, one of my questions were: Are your calls handtuned? The reply was yes. And I would never try to tune it myself. I took it apart and cleaned it. Never took the reed out. After cleaning, it sounds as good today as it did the day it arrived. It just sounds like your reed is sticking. Do you have a lot of moisture in your calling. If so just try to dry your reed as much as posible and that should help. If you know how to tune your own call you can try a different reed and cork, that could also help.
