What is the best fertilizer for a small garden? The garden will have mostly tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.

Chicken crap, use sparingly as it will burn some plants up if you are not careful. It builds the soil up unlike commercial fertilizer.

Ideally: compost amended into the soil

If your growing a garden, then you have scraps that you can compost yourself. Just make sure you tumble it to get air mixed in.

Cow manure is mostly nitrogen. Chicken or rabbit manure would be a much more balanced fertilizer. P and K don't go anywhere and build up in the soil over time. Nitrogen leaches and gets consumed faster and you spend more time replacing nitrogen than anything else. Be more concerned about Ph over fertilizing and use lime to control Ph. P and K is more root and N is more foliage.

Miracle Grow is alot cheaper than using over priced Osmocote. Osmocote Vegetable is just triple 14 (your better off just buying Triple 13). Regular Osmocote for flowers is 19-6-12.
