Displays?

Postby missed mallards » Mon Apr 07, 2014 2:24 pm

Anyone know how long a turkey fan will keep in the freezer?

Also, once ya'll kill a bird, what's ya'lls next step?

Meaning, what do you do w/ the beards/spurs to preserve them.

The meat gets thrown in flower and hot grease. Curious as to what one should do to the beards and spurs.
If I don't do it, I ain't gettin nun.......So i'm doing it

I've never had turkey cooked with flower before. What's better, dandelion or buttercups? Lol, just bustin on you.

Turkey tails last forever in the freezer because there's almost no meat on them to freezer burn, and turkey skin (or any upland bird for that matter), rehydrates pretty good compared to waterfowl. I haven't kept a turkey tail in years because I don't have the room, so all I do is clean up the spurs and put them with the beard and the shell. If you plan on taking the skin off the legs, which I do with all mine, do it fairly soon after killing the bird. The longer the skin and marrow stay around the bone, the yellower the bone will stay instead of white.

Well I keep my feet in a wooden box that I got while I was offshore..... I keep my beards in another box just like it.... Opened it up today to count beards that was in the box..(my beginner buddy wanted to know my number) and all but one beard that was in a 1'x1'x1' box
( packed full!), was all together! Some kind of bug had eaten all the flesh holding the feathers together! I was sick!!! Had several double beards in there including my personal best(10-3/4" & 8-1/2" double beard)...... Only beards I have that are together are the ones from this year...... Makes me sick just thinkin about it!

Go get some borax at the grocery store...in the clothes detergent isle. After you cut your beard off coat it real good in the borax powder. You wont have a problem with the bugs.

I fill a plastic bowl up with borax and put my beard tips in the borax in the bowl for a few weeks. I think cut the brass off the shell, knock the primer out and put a little leather loop in the primer hole, stick the beard tip in the brass and fill it up with super glue. I take a sharpie and write where and when I killed the bird on the brass.

I do mine up identical except I leave the plastic on the shell and put the cleaned spurs on the leather loop.
