Planting millet

Postby foxtrot » Fri May 16, 2014 6:37 am

I am going to attempt to plant some millet in one of my duck holes this year. Its on some WRP land that was designed for a moist soil area. About 3 acres that holds water pretty well. In the summers the banks of this area are pretty bare with just mud and a little wild grass. Any suggestion on how to prep and when to plant? Any jap millet or is there a special seed you would recommend?

Thanks in advance!

I spread some in standing water once. Real shallow mud flats kind of operation. Came up very well. I guess it'll be a timing issue, so you don't have mature millet out there too long before season. If you do get a nice stand keep a close eye on it or the worms will clean you out.

I planted some last year on July 4th. Low end of a field that stays pretty soft. Anything just to break up the ground a little bit then broadcasted with a spreader and it did fine.
