Jeff the Feds gave MS fishermen a lot of problems coming back from LA waters with snapper. Friends that fished out of LA did the same as yall. I actually dont have a dog in the fight anymore since I sold our boat. I just get so disgusted seeing the commercial guys winning!! The years I worked offshore gave me a lot of insight in the commercial snapper fishery. Those guys really hammer the fish, but the worst part is how many fish they kill!! Hundreds of times I have witnessed the commercial guys throwing the "dinks" back over (typically dead, never vented for sure) A lot of times the dinks were cut up for bait!! Everytime a boat would pull up to our platform it wouldnt take long before the killing would start; dead snapper back behind the boat as far as you could see.

With a 9 day season and limit of two they are basically saying we don't want you fishing but we have to give you something. This is political corruption at its best and is absolutely a slap in the face.

that's why a lot of people are now practicing filet and release with red snapper. It's kindof like catch and release, but not really.

And that "not really" is what'll get you.

The nine day season definitely sucks but I'm flying down from CO to fish 7 days of it.

We need to get Senator Cochran to wake up and join the right side of the fight. All he wants to do is support the commercial fisherman. Senator Shelby of AL understands the problem is outdated management practices and believes (based on sound evidence) that there is enough for each constituency to have their alloted share. He wants a clean of the current commission and starting fresh with fresh minds.

Good luck with that...Thad is an entrenched, for better or worse, supporter of the lobby that lobbies hardest. This has been and will continue to be a double edged sword for Mississippi. This philosophy has brought money and jobs to MS and it has caused problems (like this one) as well.

The only way this issue is resolved is two-fold: (1) The GOP is going to have to take back the White House and that president is going to have to appoint sensible people over the regulatory agencies - just looking at demographics and recent polls, that is highly unlikely for 2016 and the future; and (2) the recreational fisherman, guides and charter boat captains are going to have to pool their money and formulate an organized lobby for a more common sense approach to fisheries management.

If both of those don't happen, the Gulf of Mexico is going to become essentially a catch and release fishery in the next 10 years for recreational anglers.
