meat dog for a kid

Guys, I need your help. I have a local 16 year old kid I've been trying to mentor a little duck hunting. He had a pup that got hit by a car. So he wants a duck dog. I am looking to find him a meat dog free / cheap as he doesn't have much money. I hate I missed the chessie / labs in the classifieds as that would be about ideal.
I am going to the Greenwood pound at lunch to look there.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like an awesome idea. I would chip in for a pup if you wanted to set up an account.

I don't know if a Golden is an option, but this is from the Bullnettler located in Florence MS:
Free Reg. 2 year old, male 2 weeks obedient trained, crate trained, love to retrieve. call for more info. Heather 601-845-6105,,needed to find home asap

I saw that also and almost posted it but wasn't sure if they make good duck dogs or not...

Goldens make great duck dogs. Actually the smartest and best dog we've ever had period. In his older days he was a lil slower but was an awesome dog all around

Well, he had to get a ham sammich too, but we had every newspaper within eyesight laying in the garage every morning.
Goldens make great retrievers. They don't seem to be near as high strung as labs, but don't expect them to get in a hurry bringing the birds back. Jake would bust ass to get to the retrieve and then mosey on back.

My dad's lab is like that. Kind of funny. She's be going as fast as she could to get the duck (or dummy) but would walk back. I'm sure it's just a personality thing. There's a million worse problems for a retriever to have than to lolly gag bringing birds back as long as they hold on to them. Mine can't wait for me to shoot another duck or throw the dummy again and she runs just as fast each way.
Goldens are great dogs. The only drawback to them as hunting dogs is they take a bit longer to dry off and clean off if they get muddy. My wife wants one for her next dog. They say they are smarter than labs in general, but that's probably subjective. Both have the potential to be extremely smart dogs.
