Maybe we can get a thread fired up on the brush subject....
My Uncle Sonny used to cut 10-14' willows and tie them together in about a 16" diameter bunch....we would cut all day long from ditches or whereever else he could locate them....when we tied them to the blind (keep beavers from stealing them), we would alternate flipping them one way, then the other to keep it solid from having holes in between them.
Seems like alot of boys in Arkansas like to use oak tree limbs and cut em while they are still green....uncle in Lake Charles uses marsh grass....cane....and wax myrtles in the marsh...

Sorghum Sudan grass. I planted it around my blind and planted a separate patch at home. Once the time comes, I will cut down my home patch and attach to my blind, that way I don't knock down what's around my blind

don't use up your house stash too early...after good frost it is toast and you begin the "falling" period. hard rains will beat it down, fold it over, etc and it doesn't stand back up once toasted. a good solid stand that stood to the middle of my driver's window and higher (yukon) before frost was a little over knee high by Christmas in what was left useable in the thickest spot.

Just had to reseed Sorghum Sudan Grass around my blind today. The rains we got last week washed it all away...the fella I bought this stuff from said it's supposed to grow 10-14ft high and when the rain and wind beats it down that it will break almost exactly in half, so it should still be at least 5ft. I guess we'll see, if torrential rains are finally done. Here's a link to the guy I bought it from if anyone's interested in SSG or any other specialty seed http://www.oakhavenforages.com/products.phpdonia wrote:don't use up your house stash too early...after good frost it is toast and you begin the "falling" period. hard rains will beat it down, fold it over, etc and it doesn't stand back up once toasted. a good solid stand that stood to the middle of my driver's window and higher (yukon) before frost was a little over knee high by Christmas in what was left useable in the thickest spot.

We don't use brush very often........just grass and sometimes, cane. We're firm believers in keeping a low profile and using sun (i.e., shadows) and wind to our advantage.
Here's Anne's 1436 jon 'grassed-up'.......

..........'had a good hunt that day. Mallards all inside of 25 yds.
But when we DO use brush.....it's sorta like a gallberry bush, and grows naturally along the highway and areas we hunt. I'll get some photos tomorrow.

I don't plant sorghum sudangrass anymore. Looks great right up until about mid December. Then it breaks over to about knee high.
I cut oak limbs or willows before frost. Keeps the leaves on a long time.

What he said. Even in a field, the ducks pay no attention to oak limbs.Wingman wrote:

I don't have any pictures of our blinds out on the levees with oak limbs, but we use them there too. Are blinds are honestly too big to get that much grass for cover.
However, a good paint job for a base is important!

Sorry St. John.......I don't know what the problem is with my photos.
But for those who CAN see them.........what's the name of this plant?......(the bush in center of photo...not foreground)

Here's a close-up of the foliage.......

Either the male or the female develops a 'white-like' pigment later-on in the Summer, while the other remains green.
Another view.......

Southern Red Oak is our primary choice. The leaves seems to stay attached much better than the other oak tree varieties.
I am interested in purchasing duck calls that were made by Mike McLemore. I am a family member and they have a sentimental value.
