Ask DS.....car tag

I bought the wife a new 2014 Honda Pilot yesterday and bought the tag this morning. I knew the tag would sting and it did, with credits the cost was $518. The part I can't understand is how my brother's tag was almost $300 cheaper when credits are removed from my tag. He bought the exact same SUV with the exact same options. Only difference is the color with his silver and my wife's blue. I understand that the cost is greatly influenced by where you live and the value of the vehicle but I don't see $300 difference between Rankin and Lee county. If anything I would have thought Lee would be cheaper.

You ought to compare Rankin County to Hinds County. Our tags and taxes in general are cheaper than the majority of other places I know of. Yes its possible.

I believe the state sets the value of all vehicles in the state. The ad valorem rate will differ in each municipality.

BOOM... those hinds co tags are crazy high.
I'm still not sure how Hinds "people" afford to put a tag on their benz when they get them.

So you are saying your brother bought a new Honda SUV and the tag was only $200. That is crazy cheap! In 2007 I bought a new truck in Madison county and paid about $500. I think this was that bad. It went down about $100 per year for the next few years.

First tag on my 12 F-150 in Rankin County was something around $270. I paid them and ran out of there. I just knew they had messed up something and I underpaid.

A lot of things go into how much your car tag is going to cost. Local tax rates, school bonds, county and municipality populations, tax basis, other taxes, etc. That is why it costs more for the same exact vehicle in Lee county than it does in Hinds county.
For example, Clarksdale is THE highest car tag tax rate in the state. Not only do they have a fairly low population of tax payers and car owners, but they have a very large area protected by the levee (which is one of the taxes on the tag), several school bonds for both county and city, and a whole host of other fun little charges. (That is why, when I was living in Water Valley and spoke with a friend of mine who lived in Clarksdale, I found that we had each bought the exact same vehicle within about a month of each other. My car tag was over $400.00, and his was almost 3 times that amount. Ain't government wonderful.)

Highest tags in the state are in Washington County. Bolivar isn't low either. The cheapest tag i've had in several years in Bolivar on a vehicle less than 3 years old has been over $1000 and i live in the county and not city so no city taxes. I messed up and put my office address in Washington Co on one vehicle.......$4500.00. Yes, you read that right.
I'd be doing back flips if i could pay $400 for a car tag. You can't do that here with a 7 year old vehicle with over 100,000 miles.

Leflore Co may be one of the highest too. My buddy in Gwood bought a new Chevy. He used his mom and dad's address in Carrollton for everything and saved $500 on the tag cost.
Louisiana tags are $20 for 4 years on most vehicles but god their roads are GARBAGE.

I'm a delta transplant that resides in Rankin co by the rez now, I bought a new tag for a f-150 last week that sticker priced around $53,000. I was shocked when the lady said that will be $246 sir, back home in Washington co it would have been $1,246. It's got to be based on working and tax paying population ratio.
