Mud Buddy Motor Key Way Wallowed Out

I have a 5 hp Long tail and the keyed shaft of the motor is wallowed out and the yoke has spun on the shaft making the key way slot shallower than it should be. Now when I put a new key way in it will not hold.

I was thinking of drilling a hole all of the way through the motor shaft and putting a bolt through it, but the shaft is a .75 and I am not sure it would hold. I have also thought fo welding it. How do I fix it?

Don't weld it!!!! I did that and did the bolt trick as well to a 6 1/2hp it worked with a bolt but sherred the hell out of 1/4" grade A bolts......So I turned to taking a grinder and nothching out my shaft for another keyway and that worked fine.

Had good luck years ago with a home made rig by having a machinist build up the shaft and machine down to original and cut a new key way. Lucky a good friend owned the shop as I do not know what that would have cost me.

Thanks Blake,

I had a feeling that welding it wouldn't work. I am thinking about drilling and tapping a hole directly on top of the Key Way. The idea is when I tighten the bolt it will hold the key way in the key way groove.

Does this sound like it would work?

i like the idea of cutting a new key way groove on the other side of the shaft.
