Looking at getting a Browning X Bolt Micro Medallion vs Ruger American Compact. Both would be in 243. The ruger has an 18" barrel, the browning has a 20". Anyone have either of these 2. It is going to be primarily for my boys but I will inevitably use it as well.

I have sold several of the Ruger American and they have all gotten rave reviews from the customers. Nuker got the same gun you are referring to in 308 and sent me the group he shot with it.. It was amazing for the price.. I have 2 Americans in 25-06 and 5.56 but have not been able to get them out to the range to shoot them yet..

I think you have to decide if you want the gun to be an heirloom you pass down, or a utility rifle. For utility I would go Ruger, otherwise I would go browning..

What cwink said. I'd bet the xbolt would be more accurate but it is a crap shoot most times. Get something bigger than a .243. 257 Roberts or one of my favorites 260

Ive killed a pile of deer with 85 grain barnes x bullet. If you don't reload federal loads it. 3200 fps is scooting and will kill any deer you hit.

.243 is perfectly fine for deer.. I think it's funny that we argue which round is best for a 120lb deer yet go to the Alaska game and fish site and they say 7m-08 is fine for 1600lb moose or anything else up there... :D :D :D

Those two guns are kinda in different classes. With that said, if I had the money to buy an xbolt, I'd buy the American and spend the difference on something else. Not a big Browning fan, but the American is more of a bargain basement rifle (with great accuracy reports, btw).

I am a Browning fan but I'd echo Stang and say get the Ruger and put the extra $ on the scope.

I don't know if it helps you or not, but I have the Browning Xbolt in 30-06 and I love mine. Very accurate gun. Not sure about the smaller calibers though.

My to to gun has always been my browning Abolt in 280, well after me and my ex broke up I took the pistol I bought for her and traded it in on a Ruger American in .270. Long story short that little Ruger has own me over and I'm not sure the browning will leave the safe this year.
