Is there any other way to have texting on an ipad, without going thru all that registration bullsheeit with Apple???

I was given an ipad as a gift, but I just don't like Apple.

no, you're using an apple service to iMessage on the ipad which requires an apple id as does iTunes etc...

yes, do you have Comcast service. If so load the Xfinity connect app and it has text messaging. Download the app from the play store or Itunes.

You would need an apple ID to download the xfinity app which defeats the intended purpose of avoiding apple. If he had a apple ID he could just use iMessage.

You need to get rid of the iPad. Having an iPad and not wanting to register with Apple is about going to be the same as having a car but not wanting to buy gasoline.

Create a legend. I've had various identities going for years. Some are quite developed. I even have prepaid credit cards under certain names.
