Anyone have SlingTV?

Postby Natty » Tue Jun 30, 2015 12:39 pm

Directv contract is about to/has run out and thinking about getting SlingTV basic. I also plan on getting netflix or hulu or one of the streaming services. I have one smart tv and one "dumb" tv so I guess I would have to get a streaming stick or something for that one. SlingTV will give you either a Roku or FireTv stick or you can get a Roku 3, Amazon FireTv, or Nexus for $50 so that would go to the "dumb" tv. Also debating getting a Tablo for the DVR and to get local channels instead of getting an antenna. Just want to cut down on costs and this seems like a good way considering what we watch (News, sports, HGTV(wife)). Anyone have experience with these?

I tried it for a bit but found that i can get everything slingtv offers me through either Hulu or Netflix in combo with ESPN app for sports and HD TV antenna for locals.

I pay around 30 bucks a month for 2 netflix and 2 hulu accounts.

We cut the cord about 2-3 months ago and haven't looked back.

Interesting. Why do you have two accounts each of Netflix and Hulu though? I'd straight up cut it all out, but what's that happy wife saying again? Ha. All she watches are some NBC shows, Bachelor/ette, and HGTV. Obviously the first two are on local channels NBC and ABC but don't know how I could get the HGTV. I think some shows are on Netflix but not everything. Might just nip that one and deal with the repercussions until she gives up :D . What kind of antenna do you have?

We have 4 TV's that may be streaming at the same time. I opted to have 2 possible sources for each at all times. Two tv's using netflix and two using hulu simultaneously.

Netflix has a lot of the HGTV shows but not all. For the shows that netflix and hulu don't cover i make use of a Android tv box which runs KODI. Kodi is a content management system based around media. It allows me to add sources from around the web to pull in shows and other streams that are hosted on servers across the globe.

Plex is another option in that space.

edub, I am going to need a detailed rundown on the Plex and KODI options. You mentioned KODI before and I tried to research it, but honestly just got more confused.

On topic, Sony announced last week or so that they intend the PlayStation Vue app to have a per network / channel subscription option available. So if you want to just get Sportsman's Channel, HGTV, and HBO, that's all you have to get. Not 300 other channels that you pay for and don't use.

Roku 3 is the way to go. Amazon Prime instant video is free if you already have Amazon Prime for the free shipping. And then add Sling TV for ESPN, CNN, Food network, and Cartoon Network. Antenna gets your local channels in digital. 30 bucks a month and you are rocking! I'm never using Comcast again!!!

for ease of use Roku all the way...

For the techies they may opt to look into the Android TV box's. You can load HGTV, ESPN, netflix, hulu etc... from the google play store and stream all of those right on the tv.

I have my security cameras rigged up to my android tv box (via app) in the living room so that the wife can flip sources and watch the kids playing out front while shes cooking or what knot.

Just hit me up with any questions. It's easy once you download it and play around with it. KODI has an .exe that you can pull down and install on a laptop or desktop to play around with for learning purposes.

I run one similar to this outside and push the signal to my TV's using the existing coax drops.

How fast of an Internet connection does one need to have good streaming. Mine would be on two TVs max.

Cable or Uverse. DSL might cut it for one tv....might. And if you are going to watch a lot of streaming tv you will probably need to upgrade to a business class line from one of those two. One of our neighbors got cut off for a few days from Comcast due to going over their data limit of I believe 300GB/month. However they are not strictly enforcing unless you are exceeding it every month. Not sure if AT&T does the same with Uverse. Or if you have CSpire fiber available that will work.

Surprisingly I can stream 3-4 sources at once on DSL with an avg of 5.4MB/s down. Now with that said if I have. 4 streams active my bandwidth is garbage when using a computer. My only options are att DSL or Comcast and I hate Comcast due to their capping and crappy service in our hood.

Anybody have the Cspire fiber? Not available down here but I heard it was supposed to be extremely fast.

Not trying to hijack the thread but am curious about this too. They are currently laying this fiber in our neighborhood right now. Looked online at their pricing and channel options. They want $140 per month for TV & Internet but I think you get a $10 discount if you have CSpire cell service. Doesn't make sense for me to switch from DirecTV & Comcast internet right now as I am only paying $110 per month for both.
