Once the legislature okays a lottery in MS, I fully expect the MDWFP to start charging draw application fees again.
Any thoughts?

I'm for it. It's only $5. Since they quit charging, I hardly ever get drawn; once this year.
I hope they put the draw money back in the wma s

$5/app. How many draw periods in a season? 5-6?
$25-30 per wma for 3-4 areas- $75-120 for a "chance" to get drawn?
No thanks.

$120 for a chance to hunt a well managed area. Heck yeah that's a deal.
That's what I'm talking about. My chances just went up bc you are not willing to risk $120.

Bad news for the standby hunters. I like it free purely from a standby hunter's point of view. Ole Jimbob and his 5 cousins down in Biloxi put in for a north MS WMA 5 times a year. Guarentees they don't show up and I get to hunt on standby.
Participation numbers on WMAs won't change, just the number of permit holders will go up. Six one way/ half dozen the other. Except the second way MDWFP makes money. If it actually goes to wardens, habitat, etc. I'm good with it. General fund? Not so much.

All monies go to the general fund.

Well that's that then. But who cares what I think. If the state passes a lottery, MDWFP will be charging for draws. It's that simple.

I agree with you. MDWFP will defently take advantage of the new law.

Better yet, take that $120 and buy some lotto tickets. Maybe you'll hit the big one and won't ever have to hunt public again.

here's the way i look at it....i don't mind paying a reasonable fee to hunt a well managed area....IF I ACTUALLY GET TO HUNT THE WELL MANAGED AREA.
IF the MDWFP wants to make more money from draws on wildlife management areas, it should only charge those that are actually getting to use it, and not by charging everyone putting in for a CHANCE to use it.
IF the MDWFP is going to charge on the front end, then refund those people who are not drawn. Or do like they do with Canemount and conduct the draw before the season and charge those that are drawn for a permit. if payment for the permit is not received by a certain date, conduct another draw for the remaining spots/dates. Then, charge the standby hunters for a use permit if they are drawn for standby slots open on hunt day. That way the folks using the property are paying for the privilege to use it.
what could be more fair than that?

I think this could be good for the MDWFP. I don't mind paying a little more to duck hunt each year so long as the money goes toward that agency. If the current trend continues in which hunter numbers are decreasing nationwide, we're going to need to increase the number of ways in which MDWFP can raise money.

my understanding is that the lottery legislation would not allow earmarks on the funds, but go into the general fund.
seems to me the most logical way for the MDWFP to raise money for wildlife related expenditures would be to increase the cost of Mississippi Duck Stamps or the annual hunting licenses.

When did this start? I work for the MDWFP and this is news to me. Hasn't been working this way.

It is my understanding that under the proposed lottery legislation, lottery proceeds would not be earmarked, but go into the general fund.

- "Bryant’s only stipulation on the issue is that any revenue generated from the lottery would not be earmarked for one specific line item in the state budget. Instead, the revenue would flow into the general fund."
I am not saying the draw application fees that were charged in the past all went to the general fund. It did seem, however, that the draw application fee was a lottery at a time when Mississippi did not allow lotteries.
