Have any of you camped on Cat Island?

Planning a trip with my older boys in my Troop for late April. Looking for some tips.

Would another Island be better? We really just want to fish and go caveman. Don't want a tourist trip.

Thanks.

Post on the saltwater fishing portion of the bull nettle thing. Those guys know it better. Better be prepared crossing the bay though. It can get rough if the weather blows up. Also, from my time in the marsh, always be prepared for horse files and biting deer flies(or whatever they are called).

We use to camp on last island plenty when I was a kid. Same concept different area. Yes skeeters can get bad but we usually didn't sleep much. Set up tent before dark, then ate and gigged flounder for a few hours. Then usually fished under some lights next to a well head. Specks and white trout till you couldn't reel anymore. Good time for sure for kids.

At least some of Cat Island is, to my surprise, privately owned. Folks live out there. I was like, WHUTTT???

If there's a public camping place, you're good though. I know you can camp on Horn and Petit Bois.

I believe the State now owns everything on Cat that BP had, and there is some US land.

Yeah I have a friend/acquaintance who just rebuilt their place out there. Is on the interior of the island. Pretty cool.

Question Rob,
Why Cat over the other islands? Just curious what the determining factor is for you.

Legends of the Lower Marsh recommended it. Deer was too close to civilization. I figured they'd find a way to swim ashore and hookup with the ladies if we didn't put more sharks between us and them. :)

Well the difference is, do you want to catch fish, or just go out and experience the get away. Last island, wine island, east and west timbalier are all great fishing islands with plenty of water between you and land. You will greatly increase your chances of catching fish at those places over cat island.

Back in 1978, we took our Sea Scout boat out of New Orleans out there and camped ashore for the weekend. Good fishing/floundering. No see'ums will eat you up. Bring skin so soft a lather up.

Camped on on Horn, Round and Petit Bois. We always used a boat to fish, so I can't help much there. Bring a thermacel. Petit Bois does not seem to get the crowds the others do. Horn will get POPULATED on weekends in warm weather with scantily clad females and escorts. :D

What are you going out on? We camped Horn 2 weeks ago and planning on doing Cat in April. You can also camp on East Ship and Petit Bois.
