Cover of the NCAA special edition is a MSU team picture with 6 whites and seven blacks.Starts with Richard Williams hiring and his early successes against Shak, Chris Jackson, et al. Told of recruiting problems against bigger programs so State focused on in state talent. Reached Sweet 16 in 1995 losing to eventual champs UCLA.
The history of Dontae beginning with him not being able to meet academic qualifications in high school so he worked @ Kenny Rogers Roasters during the day and played in night leagues in Nashville. Was discovered by Northeast CC where he averaged 29 points. Describes the fiasco of him passing 36 hrs to meet eligibility requirements and a State academic coordinator having to just about lead him to classes.
The season starts with 8500 fans attending a midnight practice televised on ESPN at the Hump. State won 10 of its first 11 and was ranked 9th before losing 3 of 4, falling from the rankings. Won the Western Division and faced number 1 Ky in the SEC tournament finals. Dontae went off for 28 and beat Ky 84-73. Seeded 5th in the NCAA, State beat Virginia Comm., Princeton, and Cinn. Richard looking @ the croud, smiled, and shrugged his sholders @ Dontae's performance. Fina fo, fina fo!!! Thought they were rock stars. Then lost to the Cuse cause by 21 turnovers.
Dontae quits school goes pro. So does Dampier. Walters and Darryl Wilson graduate.
Describes Bullard past, drug problems and storied pro career in other countries. He's now in Parchman.
Talks about academics at State with one of the highest graduation rates in major college programs. 10 of 13 graduated.
Bullard's in prison
Dampier's in the pros
Dontae's playing in North Korea
Walter's is in a family owned trucking business in Laurel
Darryl's playing in Italy
Edmonson is a CPA in Jxn
Whit Hughes works for the State
Bart Hyche sells dental supplies in Birmingham
Rula works for his father's construction company in Jxn
Jay Walton is an assistant coach @ Libscomb U
Tyrone Washington is playing in Italy
Finally, gives Richard's history after being fired by State.
Unbiased. Not real negative. Lots of positives. a must read for State fans.
