Ron Polk
I think he has done his do at MSU. He's been good...but it's time to get somebody in that WILL recruit and then COACH. There's no reason MSU shouldn't be a contender every year.

The only reason we are getting the players that we get now is because of Ron Polk. Ron still has several good yrs left in him, no where near ready to leave. Now I admit that Ron has gotten softer in his age not pushing the boys as hard as in yrs past but McNickle has taken over that aspect of the coaching and is pushing those boys to their limits, especially the pitchers. Ron needs to ride it out as long as possible because I'm not ready for Raffo to take over....which is what will happen when Polk retires.
I don't see it that way! He's a grouchy old man who has lost his way. Rather than focusing on winning championships, he's busy griping about NCAA rules.
Furthermore, the game has passed him by
Kids will come here based on our history/reputation. We need a coach who has some fire and is hungry to go to Omaha.
Larry, please give him a pink slip, some retirement $ and the gold watch. I can't take it anymore!

Aiight.....you are starting to make me mad.
Who and what do you think put MSU athletics on the board so to speak with other great schools.....Ron Polk and baseball. MSU is a baseball school......not basketball, not football........BASEBALL!!!!!
I could care less about any other sport at MSU except for baseball, as you can see this is a very touchy subject when someone starts ripping on Polk for standing up for what's right and speaking his mind. No other baseball coach in the ncaa has the balls that Polk has when it comes to throwing it back at them. The rest of them are scared to do so. At least he's man enough to stand up and say you're screwing the baseball program of every ncaa university in the nation. Football and basketball are no more important than baseball. Baseball is the #2 moneymaker for the ncaa, yet gets no respect when it comes to giving scholarships to players. Football can get 80+ scholarships, but baseball only gets 11.7 for 40 players, now that's F'd up.
And Polk is right.....he's having one hell of a time trying to compete against other sec schools that have the ability to offer in state and out of state players full scholarships due to legislation, UM, MSU, USM....none of them have that luxury.
If someone needs a pink slip it's LT himself. As much as he's tried to get all the tradition out of this school, Polk is still fighting him over the baseball tradition. Only thing LT is good for is keeping us in the black when it comes to the budget, nothing more, nothing less.

I'm hearing you and agreeing. Polk does stand up for ncaa baseball. BUT that ain't what I'm wanting out of a head baseball coach. How about letting somebody else do that and get your dang team ready to play ole miss. We ain't won the mayor's trophy since he's been back from GA!! What's worse we ain't done crap in the last 5-6 years of his coaching the team
Baseball schools go to the CWS! If we are one why can't make a little showing?
I appreciate what the Coach has done for the school...but what have you done lately? This has a Joe Paterno ring to it...

How many baseball schools can say that they've won 60-80% of their baseball games over say the past 30 yrs? I would venture to guess not many. MSU is one of them I believe.....because of Ron Polk. Up until last night's game Bianco had thrown his weekend guys in that mayor's trophy game, whereas Polk hasn't. Bianco would throw 2-3 to win it where Polk would throw 5-6 to get some innings in. As for the UM pitcher last night we always have problems with softer throwing lefties. I honestly don't know why they were having so much trouble with him because I ripped him and his brother back in high school during summer league play, and he hasn't changed not one bit since leaving high school, pitching wise. As I remember the last 2-3 times we've made it to the super regional the NCAA had paired us up against the #1 seed going to the CWS, not real lucky in that area.

YES! he's right...
look, i HATE state, but i'm gonna tell ya something, until you sit IN HIS office, and hear what he has to say you have NO IDEA what he does for recruiting....i was one of the lucky ones that sat in that office while he puffed on a cigar...state offered books and a redshirt freshmen year, w/ hopes of playing as a JR/SR...hell, it looked good to me, plus all my friends were headed that way to play but i went elsewhere (usm) in order to play earlier...that was the summer of '93 - the year state lead the NATION in recruiting w/ the diamond dawgs.
one of my still close buddies was an all-american there during that time frame - richard lee...we played summer ball w/ the jackson '96rs for 3 years and i used to live w/ him during the summers as i lived about an hour from jackson....he came to oxford at the same time i was there for his MS, and i can tell ya, he'd kill for polk.........same w/ ALOT of other guys...polk is a quirky dude to say the least, but his mind is on baseball and WINNING 24/7 - bank on it..
i can tell you this, the ONLY people connected to state that are living off the mid-80's years w/ palmero/clark/thigpen/brantley are the peeps posting here

baseball is inherently SLOW, you DO NOT "get passed by", and you DO NOT forget "how to coach...
the problem for state and many others schools is that good solid D1 talent IN NUMBERS hasn't come outta this state in a few years; therefore, the same schools are recruiting the same talent, just in lesser numbers.....to put it in context, if you were a player recruited by state vs. lsu vs. georgia vs. tenn (and if you're good enough for state, your good enough for the others) which school are you going too? i'd venture to guess it'd be NOT state - hell, 2 off em have one nat titles recently....
again, i HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT STATE, except the man in question...until you've seen him coach and heard how he thinks, you have no idea....just MHO tho, gator

i hear ya gator... i didn't know you were a baseball stud!!!!
i like what you say about baseball being inhertiently slow... very good take.. and you don't forget how to coach baseball... good point again..
and you hit on something i've been saying for a while.. the effort to recurit players here in miss is now more difficult than its ever been.. evidenced by bianco at ole miss who's been doin a darn good job.. and then the man at usm.. shoot he's an outstanding baseball man/mind and a dam good recuriter ...

water, i actually left usm for a year (soph) and played for both of these guys at meridian cc....we lost the juco championship game out in grand junction, co, in the top of the ninth by a home run to NE texas cc...i can tell you w/ a straight face the next time i see you, i honestly think the TWO GREATEST BASEBALL MINDS in the state are at usm right now.....
i would die TODAY for both coach palmer (head coach) and esp coach scot berry (assistant head coach)....but, i can also say that neither is as good by themselves as they are when coaching together....
anyway, i didn't mean to jump in on this, BUT coach polk is a good coach and good man - THAT'S 2 things NO school should think of giving up...incidently, msu went thru 4-5 "down" years prior to my freshmen year (94), then for 2 years they struggled as the players were soooo young................then they went to omaha a year or two....just something to think about - gator

po monkey i'm impressed with your knowledge... however esquire... the begining of your post is all wrong ... state never forced polk to leave the first time... thats just flat out incorrect.. he retired the first time because he was sick of the NCAA and the unfair limitations they place in college baseball...
now proceed on gentlemen ... i like this post .. good takes on all sides of the issue..
and not little fartheaded weedmaster spillin his bama venom!!!!!
