Time for change at the top of MSU Baseball??

Postby ScottS » Mon Apr 18, 2005 11:25 am

I had the priviledge of going to school when State was a perrennial contender for the SEC in baseball and my sophmore year at State was 1985.

Where has our baseball program gone in the last 10-15 yrs? I don't want to hear about Hope or state scholly's either.

I want to know why the last time we went to the CWS was under a different coach?
I want to know why we have "hitters" who can't hit a curveball to save their life?
I want to know why we have a HC who's philosophy is to take the first pitch....even if it's down the pipe a belt high
I want to know why we can have the largest stadium in the country, sometimes the best "atmosphere" in college baseball, and pretty much unlimited resources for the program, yet still be no better than 7th-8th in a 12 team league?

RP should have stayed retired. When he called LT, when Mac left, he supposedly said "what are WE going to do?" LT then says that, "I knew I had him when he said that." Well Sh#t, maybe we should have fired your sorry booty for even thinking about bringing RP back to State. RP has had four years and where are we? Mac is in his 4th yr at UF and they are leading the overall SEC and ranked pretty dman high.

Oh well, bitching on a message board won't change things at State. I just had to vent after the crap this past weekend. BTW, I don't give a rip about us compared to the Rebs. When the day comes that we are forced to justify and compare our program to the Rebs, that is the day that Miss State Baseball has sunk to it's lowest depths!!

Scott, taking the first pitch at the plate is freakin' protocol, was taught to all us players coming up through little league, dixie dean, and into high school. The take sign in my opinion is the reuination of a great hitter, main reason I never paid attention to them and ripped the fastball down the pipe on the first pitch. You are to do as your coach tells you...unless you say screw that like me and do as you please.......but I could get away with it because I had the best eye at the plate, knew not to swing at crap.

And the deal with us going to the CWS under McMahon? He did it with Polk's players.....and look what McMahon left him with when Polk came back......not much of chit. I hated McMahon with a passion, would get so sick and tired of listening to his same ole bs day in, day out. And actually, Florida blows right now. Bama is only #1 in the west for one reason, haven't play "the" teams in the sec as of yet...........not that good either.

Everybody becomes a coach on these message boards when their team starts to lose, calling for the coach's head, then the players. There's a lot more into in than you would think. As for the lack of curveball hitters, 90% of your big leaguers can't even hit the freakin' thing.

yeh I feel its time for a change as well,
Taking to you get a strike is still used depending on a lot of variables, score of the game, innings left, is the hitter on a streak or slump, is the pitcher looking for the plate, is this a homerun fast ball hitter, guys sometimes the pros are taking until the first strike, its just fundamental baseball, kinda like bunting a guy over if there is no outs and a non slugger is up to bat and you need some runs,
I just want to see State succeed as much as anyone, and I think some young blood at the helm would help the diamond dogs.

i'm not gonna say anything negative bout the actual on-the-field coaching... i'm sure the man knows far more bout baseball than all us "other coaches".

i will say that i'm disapointed with the recuriting... too many local miss guys have chose um and usm over msu.. a lot of these local guys state didn't offer a scholly too....

whats the kids name from vicksburg that plays the outfield for um.. chit he's hitting like 450.. i know he would have preferred to play at state but we didn't offer him... hell he's hit as many home runs as our whole team...

Unlike past recruiting yrs Polk has hit the local area pretty hard, got 7-10 commitments so far I believe. Let UM have all the local boys, still can't win 40 games nor win a regional game.

Like I've been saying, the game has past him by while he sits around griping. Yes, he's still a better coach than most schools have, but I could care less what others have. We need a man focused to the point that our guys get hungry to win.

LT will hire in-house, will not go outside the university for a head coach. You've got Raffo and McNickle..........Raffo's got the more yrs so he's more than likely the leader. McNickle is a fireball, has gotten alot of these players up and doing something this season, especially the pitchers.

if we were to lose coach polk this year, i don't think raffo's ready.. hell some people are mentioning that if we flame this year that instead of firinig polk fire raffo.. i did notice a couple of weeks ago at the mayor's trophey game; when polk got kicked out he handed his lineup card to mcnickle not raffo...

heck it prolly a moot point anyway, cuz L.T. prolly will let polk stay till he's 97...

LT will not fire a man that has his name on the Green Monster in centerfield. Polk will leave on his own, and he's not ready to leave. The pitching coach always takes over when the head coach gets tossed, but you can't read much into that when the HC jobs comes up. Raffo had his chance in '98, but said he wasn't ready so they gave it to Mac. However, all the aggressiveness on this team this season was brought about by McNickle, pickoffs and such.

Hell we were a baseball power for years because we were the only school that emphasized baseball. We had Paul Gregory and a national reputation before other SEC schools emphasized the sport. Baseball back then was about like the soccer team. Polk had the facility upgraded, attendance was high, and other schools saw the potential in the sport. Now everyone considers baseball to be a major sport. All have good to great facilities, have more money and talent pools to compete against, and a good % can offer scholarships that State can't. Don't take this wrong but I feel State still thinks that we are a dominant force like Mississippi does in football. Mississippi does not understand that the all the old greats from 1958 - 1960 teams are about all dead. Nothing of any significant in 45 years but they still believe they are a football powerhouse. How long will we think Raffy and Will just left. just my twisted opinion.

Probably wont get rid of Polk just hope it dont get as bad as the Sherrill downswing, funny lets see what happens with old Smoke at LSU they dont tend to put up with losing, you think Joe Torre is going to make the All Star break with the Yanks, kinda of funny
Winners dont put up with Loosing, when is State going to figure it out...
