PETE ROSE, PETE ROSE, PETE ROSE! THIS TOPIC IS ABOUT AS WORE OUT AS TURKEY BAISTER AT MELISSA ETHERIDGE'S HOUSE. LET THE GUY IN THE HALL OF FAME AND QUIT WHININ'! WHAT'S WORSE, HIM GAMBLING OR OWNERS CHARGIING $7 FOR A BEER AND $8 FOR A HOT DOG? I DON'T CARE IF PETE ROSE POOPS ON A PICTURE OF CY YOUNG IT DON'T EFFECT MY LIFE. WHAT DOES AFFECT ME IS THESE DUMB ASS OWNERS PAYING SOME FORMER WEED PICKER TURNED SHORTSTOP 4 MILLION BUCKS A YEAR MAKING FOLKS HAVE TO PUT BALL TICKETS ON LAYAWAY. MAYBE HE'D HAVE A BETTER CHANCE IF HE'D BEAT HIS WIFE TWICE A DAY AND SNORTED UP THE FIRST BASE LINE LIKE A FEW OTHER HALL OF FAMERS. LOOK, I LOVE BASEBALL DON'T GET ME WRONG, BUT THESE PEOPLE IN CHARGE MAKE ABOUT AS MUCH SENSE AS MARVIN HAGLER ORDERING RIBS AND BISCUITS UP AT THE POPEYE'S! ITS ALL ABOUT THE GAME AINT IT? PETE ROSE WAS ONE OF THE BEST. PEOPLE SAY, "BUT LARRY, HE BET ON REDS GAMES WHEN HE WAS MANAGER." AND I SAY SO WHAT. IF I HAD MONEY RIDING ON THE REDS AND I KNEW THE MANAGER DID TOO AT LEAST I'D KNOW HE¼S GONNA BUST HIS ASS TO WIN THE THING. LIKE DARYL STRAWBERRY SAID WHEN HE SAW PETE ROSE, "WHAT A SCUMBAG, HE WAS REALLY BAD FOR BASEBALL!"

Even if it weren't for the gambling, he still lied to the fans. Wether or not he gambled could be forgiven, but not the constant lying. Screw "Hustle." If you want to feel sorry for someone, feel sorry for Joe Jackson, who didn't actually gamble and got kicked out. He was even found innocent in court. 3rd highest lifetime batting average not in the Hall? Now, that's a shame.

how about, lou Gehrig, he killed a man, or Babe Ruth he was a drunk who beat his wife. lets kick them out too. Pete Rose is the all time hits leader. Period. This about baseball not morals.

Bet they let ole Barry in when he retires even though everybody in America knows he was on juice when he smoked all those homers.

Well, he should be the all time hits leader, he's the all time at bats leader. By 2 freaking thousand at bats. He had nearly 3000 more ABs than Cobb, but only about 60 more hits. I mean, the guy has a lower career batting average than Bing Miller. Bing Freaking Miller. Pete Rose shouldn't be in the hall for any reason.

The problem on a player/manager/front office guy gambling on baseball is simple. Even if he bets on his team to win, he is creating the possibiliy for a scenario where his bookie says, "Look, you're $20,000 in the hole - you want to settle this? Lose this game to the Pirates on Sunday." Rose may not have bet against the Reds, but he created a situation where it's not unreasonable to think that he might have had to at some point.

I assume you know why baseball has these rules prohibiting gambling - not just the 1919 World Series, but the other two dozen men (including such stars as Tris Speaker and Ty Cobb) in the teens and 20s who were accused of gambling.

In every major league clubhouse, posted prominently on the bulletin board, is Rule 21(d), which states:

BETTING ON BALL GAMES. Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year.

Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.

Even MLB realizes that there is a vast difference between betting on a game where you have to duty to perform and betting on one where you do. If Rose has not bet on the Reds, he would be in the Hall right now. Gambling threatens the integrity of the game. Maybe not in the game that was bet on today, but possibly the game that will be bet on tomorrow.

Rose saw the rules, he knew the rules and he chose to ignore the rules. It has nothing to do with being a nice guy. There are no rules in baseball prohibiting people from being assholes (Cobb), racists (Cobb and Speaker), womanizers (Ruth among others), alcoholics (Foxx, Mantle, etc.), sexual deviants, murderers, cannibals, or the like. There are rules against gambling.

I like Pete Rose. I had the chance in October 1997 to sit next to him on a flight from LA to Cincinnati and we talked for four hours about nothing but baseball. I found him to be a nice guy.

But, in duck hunter terms, he was a guy who went out on someone else's land and shot 20 mallard hens while using lead shot out of a gun with no plug.

Rose had Hall of Fame numbers, HOF attitude, and was the human training film. But he threatened the integrity of the game, and that's why he can never be in the Hall of Fame.

Cannibal?

I gotta agree with lower14.

Integrity of the game says it all!! No one should be culled.

So all the others that were drunks, drug heads and the such did not hurt the integrity of the game. Guess we should respect them because they were able to play so well hung over.......... Since when was baseball or any professional sport about morals or integrity? There are some players present and past that I have the utmost respect for but there are many more that I do not.
