I tried spreading out the #'s a little more, didn't help much. This type forum hates #'s when you copy and paste them from another site.

Because the standard of living is so much lower in MS than the other states. A $30K job would be $50K in tennessee, etc. Tuition and board at MSU is around $3,000/semester....anywhere else in the SEC is over $5,000/semester.

Well, as long as we are talking about how behind Mississippi is, might as well throw a little curve ball in here.

Economist: Alabama to lead southeast in job growth
5/10/2005, 8:32 a.m. CT
The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana and Mississippi may fight it out for last place in job growth among the southeastern states over the next two years, while Alabama will lead the region, an economist has told bankers and analysts.

During the Gulf South Bank Conference on Monday, Louisiana State University economist Loren Scott predicted job growth in Mississippi of 1 percent per year through 2006 and in Louisiana of 0.9 percent this year and 1.2 percent in 2006. That would mean 23,800 new jobs in Mississippi by the end of 2006 and 40,100 new jobs in Louisiana.

The regional leaders will be Alabama, where employment is expected to grow by 2.5 percent through 2006, and Arkansas, where a 1.4 percent employment growth is forecast through 2006, Scott said.

Although Mississippi and Louisiana have both made strides in employment, both states face the possibility of losing other jobs, Scott said.

The auto and shipbuilding industries have created 5,900 jobs over the past three years in Mississippi, but those gains may be offset by layoffs at Northrop Grumman's Pascagoula shipyard if the Navy cancels orders for landing craft built there, Scott said.

Louisiana has gained jobs tied to auto production and naval vessel construction, along with a new plant in Alexandria where Union Tank Car Co. will be constructing railroad cars. But the possible closure of military installations is hanging over both states, he said.

Slightly off topic, but I never miss a chance to rile up the peanut gallery.

This thread has it all!

Lessons on standard of living (economics), geography, employment forecast, athletic programs revenue and expenses.

I am also glad to know that only the western part of Alabama stinks to high hell. At least the entire state is not that bad. Wish I could say the same for our neighbors to the west.

Here's the reason why Vandy is ahead. A full ride scholarship for a football player at Vandy is over $40,000/year. Then you multiply that times 85 and get around $3,500,000 in just scholarship money. Whereas MSU and UM's is $10,000/year, little over $800,000 total.
