was playing golf saturday and all of the canadas on the course all had their chicks with them. they all were out and old enough to be in the lakes swimming around. as are the canadas that are on our lake in our subdivision. well after hackin a ball in some pine trees, im in their lookin for my ball and come across a canadian thats on her nest. i thought it was kinda strange cause all the others had hatched and were a month or so old. so i intice her to get off of her nest and shore nuff their was 5 eggs she was protecting. i left her alone after i saw she still had eggs. my question is, is it unusual for canadians to be so late in hatching. why are all of the others so far along and this canadas eggs havent even hatched yet. just thought it was kinda interesting.

She might have lost her first clutch causing her to have another later in the year.

jtdumallard, you might want to refer to them as Canadas, not Canadians. I'm not jumping on you or anything but there are several on this board that'll give you all kinds of heck about it, used to call them Canadians too til I learned the hard way.

i have seen em not hatch there eggs sumtimes untill late may early june before around upper rez here by me

today,
myself and ol iron grip were out playin a round of disc golf.. while out playing we came across a big group of canadas approx 50 yards dead ahead of us in an open grass field..

iron grip looked at me and said .. "boy what i'd do to catch one of them young tender gosslings and 'step him up a notch in the oven'"..

i said hell yea get'em grip... next thing i know grip is runnin down the way yellin like a mad-man.. closin ground quickly on one poor ole gossling..

turns out to be a sprint to the water.. the goose gets there first with grip not far behind..

grip was goin so fast that he hit that water like a bomb... ain't seen him or the goose in the last hour.. send help///

Reminds me of a true story that occurred back in the early 90's at the Plantation Golf Course in SE Memphis.

Me and some buddies were playing a particular par 3 which you had to carry the water to get to the green. One of our members hit, and the ball landed over the water - but barely, then rolled back into the water. When we get to the green, my buddy walks down by the water to find his ball and he notices a hen mallard on the bank. As he approaches, she gets up and walks to the water, reaches down with her beak, retrieves the ball, places the ball on dry land and commences to sit on it! Needless to say, my buddy leaves her alone with it. Yes, he still had a penalty stroke for the water ball.

Man how I want one of them baby geessesses!!!!! I swam out to the island follering them suckers and couldn't get close enough to snatch one....mmmmmmmmm........ lemme get one of them sun-guns injected with some cajun marinade, it'd be so good.......I'd eat everything but the bones. They were as big as them full grown mallards waddlin round out there and still were all fuzzy with down.......mmmmmmmmm.... What could they do to a fella for havin him a non-native species for dinner this weekend?HHHHHMMMMMMMMMMM.......

Sometimes, geese re-nest after their first attempt was unsuccessful........due to any number of causes......(least of which might include a curious golfer poking around the nest site trying to see how many eggs are in there ).

'Could be that this is why she seems 'late'......or may be that goslings have a rapid growth rate and just appear substantially larger than those that hatch a week later. I think that's really deceptive. If you'll do a search on growth rates of geese, you may find a table that traces the differences in physical characteristics during the initially stages of develpment from birth to adulthood.
