SEC Announces Annual Baseball Honors

05/24/2005
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Florida sophomore first baseman Matt LaPorta was selected 2005 SEC Baseball Player of the Year, Tennessee’s junior righthander Luke Hochevar was named SEC Pitcher of the Year and Tennessee catcher J.P. Arencibia was named SEC Freshman of the Year by a vote of the league’s 12 head baseball coaches. The coaches also tabbed Florida skipper Pat McMahon as SEC Coach of the Year. LSU pitcher Jason Determann was named SEC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

LaPorta and Hochevar lead a list of players named to the first and second-team All-SEC squads for this season. LaPorta led the SEC with 23 homeruns, while finishing second with 67 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .742. Hochevar collected a SEC-high 13 wins on the year, as well as leading the SEC in innings pitched (111.2) and strikeouts (123), while carrying a 1.93 ERA.

McMahon led the Gators to a 20-10 record in conference play and the outright SEC regular season title. Florida last won the SEC in 1998. As a freshman, Arencibia collected 78 hits while helping the Volunteers to a 18-11 conference mark. Determann had seven saves on the year, including a win and a save in last weekend’s division-clinching series at Mississippi State, where Determann was named SEC Pitcher of the Week for his efforts.

Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own players, thus a unanimous selection earns 11 of the 12 first-team votes. The complete 2005 All-SEC Team follows:

Last time MSU didn't have a player on the selection list.........1987.

And what did MSU do in 1987? They made the sec tourney on the last day and smoked everyone to win it.

That's exactly what I was thinking! It's time for the sponsors to start paying again!

No reason for Easley not making the all freshmen team. Played a 1/3 of his games at catcher, lead the sec in pickoffs and throw outs.

They put 2 2b's and 2 3b's on the list, why not 2 C's? Also, Easley's numbers at 3rd were way better than the the two players put on the team.

Our players didn't play to their fullest extent this season, and this list shows that. We still have the media honors to come, surely they'll have enough since to put Easley on theirs.

Head shouldn't have made the 1st team since LaPorta smoked him at 1st base, but they screwed the most deserving DH out of his spot and gave it to Head just so he could be on 1st team.

Now don't get me wrong, he's good enough to be on the 1st team but got beat out at his position.

Jody Hurst.........probably one of the best CF's ever to play at the Dude.

Cuz Kateon sucks at defense, Rutledge too.

I've been saying for weeks to move Easley to SS, Berk at 3rd and let McCaskill catch.

McCaskill's got a cannon too, most people don't realize that though.

That's pretty harsh for a guy that was fourth in the league in Home Runs (17) and RBI's (60) and 7th in the league in ERA (2.73).

He didn't get enough at-bats as a DH to warrant the SEC coaches putting him as the best DH in the league. It's like the past 2 yrs with the all team selections in basketball, either was 3 guards/2 forwards or 2 guards/3 forwards......even though there needed to be a "legit" center on each team.

Head put up those numbers playing 1st. LaPorta had 23 bombs and 67 rbi's.
