NCAA puts ban on Indian mascots
Ruling applies only to teams in postseason events

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The NCAA banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise.

The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday.

Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive" would not be allowed by teams on their uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.

"What each institution decides to do is really its own business" outside NCAA championship events, he said.

Guidelines were not immediately available on which logos and nicknames would be considered "hostile or abusive."

The NCAA two years ago recommended that schools determine for themselves whether the Indian depictions were offensive.

Among the schools to change nicknames in recent years over such concerns were St. John's (from Redmen to Red Storm) and Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles).

The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools with such mascots that have already been selected as tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive logos.

Such logos also would be prohibited at postseason games on cheerleader and band uniforms starting in 2008.

The NCAA sucks and thats the bottom line. You would think its job was to control collegiate athletics, but instead all it has wound up to be is the aclu of college sports. Hey NCAA, instead of banning schools that are in state that have rebel flags, have indian mascots etc. etc. How bout solving your own problems. Start with the BCS bullspit games and give us a playoff season of some sort.

this is just flat out ridicilous.. first off they (ncaa) wants to make a stand.... well then chit do it.. don't panzie around go ahead and make your stand.. heres what i'm getting at...
the ncaa is saying that the masocts and symbols associated with the mascot won't be allowed at post-season games... i.e. things such as bowl games, ncaa basketball tourney..or the basball regionals....

but during the regular season thats fine the mascot can stay...

well if this chit is so offensive, why let them use it during the regular season.. i mean the regular season is much longer that the post-sesaon..

will the native americans who are offended by this not be upset during the months of sept. oct and nov..

and why does one have to consider it negative to have there named assoicated with a mascot.. universities could you just as easlily say hey yea our mascot is a choctaw.. and we picked this out of respect and we apprecitate the spirit and courage of the choctaws..

i swear i think the ncaa is run by a bunch of north-eastern liberal democrats.. screw'em.. one more thing changing mascots.. that chit ain't cheap..think about all that goes into creating a new image.. who's gonna pay for it???

I don't know how they can do anything to Florida State. They are the only one in the NCAA that has a signed letter by the Seminole Indians allowing them to use their name.

Rebel, they can do something about b/c it's is an NCAA post seanon tournament that the teams will be competing in. As BW stated, they can't touch the teams for regular season play. The teams will only be affected if they make it to post season play where the NCAA is represented by the teams involved in the match(s). I personally think it is just another step towards the dogmatic PC evolution that has been ripping this country apart. I don't agree with it...but nobobody asked for my opinion. Here is a link to an ESPN article on the matter. It really kinda lays it all out for you. By the way, rebel, you are correct in that the Seminoles did approve FSU using the Seminole indian as their mascot and stated that they will pursue the matter in a legal manner. Hopefully they will be able to get the decision overturned. We'll see...

This might have already been said but the way i read it Football will not matter. There is no NCAA Postseason Tournament. Bowl game is nothing even resembeling a tournament.

rebel, good point. If the BCS decided to adopt the same or a similar policy as the NCAA then football would be affected but otherwise there won't be any bearing on football programs. However, do you think a school such as FSU for example would actually leave their current mascot intact for only one sport? I doubt it.
