Ole Miss victory over Memphis ---Game Notes

1. Defense is much improved. No TDs by Memphis. Held D. Williams in check, to the tune of a total of 84 yards (most in the 4th quarter).

2. M. Spurlock proved that he could get the job done. While there is much room for improvement, he protected the ball, distrubuted the ball, minimized turnovers, and made enough plays to get us the W. Looking forward to seeing him steadily improve as he gets more comfortable.

3. Memphis backup QB is going to be a good one ----looked better to me than the starter who was injured early in the game. This QB, under the circumstances, performed very well and gave Memphis an unexpected boost. He just made some freshman mistakes in turnovers that were costly (thank goodness). He was offered by Ole Miss out of high school, as well as by other SEC teams. So, he is not really a "sleeper".

4. UM kicking game lacks a lot to be desired. First the good: The kickoff team did very well ---no returns, with the kicker putting the ball into the endzone. Next, the decent: Punting was average to below average. The only good thing I can say about the punting game was that we had good coverage and did not give up any significant returns. Finally, the horrible: Place Kicking. Missed two out of three field goals and even the extra points looked a little shaky. The one made field goal barely squeeked through the uprights. Need a lot of work in this area. This could have cost us the game. Maybe time to recruit from the soccer team.

5. Patrick Willis is awesome. Despite being banged up, he played through his injury and had 15 tackles. He was all over the field, terrorizing Memphis and the Deangelo Heisman campaign.

6. Coach O, IMO, coached a good game ---especially for a first game. Things appeared to go pretty smooth for the most part. We had a penalty for getting onto the field late to start the second half ----Coach O admitted he got a little carried away with the halftime pep talk. But, the kicker booted the ball into the endzone for a touchback anyway, so no harm, no foul.

7. Offensive Coordinator Noel Mazzone appeared to have a good game plan. The failure to execute on several wide open pass routes cost us an early rout of Memphis, especially on critical 3rd downs. The play calling in the red zone appeared a little too conservative at times, especially the way our field goal kickers were performing. I look for this to be an area of emphasis in getting ready for Vandy.

8. The OL is struggling. A couple of needed players are injured and out, and some are playing hurt. Hopefully the off week will give us time to get the OL regrouped. The QB needs more time to set up for the longer pass routes, and the RBs need room to get off the line of scrimmage. Often times, our RBs were having to break tackles just to get to the line of scrimmage.

9. Running game was anemic and must improve for us to have any significant success this season. (See 8 above as one of the key reasons). In addition to poor OL play, our RBs looked a little slow to me. We need more explosiveness. Mico McSwain (recently converted to RB) looked pretty good on the corners and is fast. We need Abrams back on the field to see what he can do. Disappointed in Pittman. He needs to take his game to another gear or two. A balanced offense will be critical to win enough games to get to a bowl game.

10. After losing against this Conf USA opponent the 2 previous years, I'll take the W, regardless of how we got it. An "ugly" win is still a thing of beauty to me. Overall, not a bad performance. Got the W. Need to improve in several areas.

A win is a win, but UM didn't look very good to me. The defense looked good because the starting Memphis qb was out and the backup knew 5 plays at best. Spurlock didn't look bad except he can't keep up with the play clock. I was neutral on Coach 0 but now I know I hate him.

Go DOGS!!!!!

Riiiight....  What's that guy's name....ah schit...it was on the tip of my tounge...oh yeah, DeAngelo Williams. That guy, he's got some talent and not because I say so. How many yards did he get? When was the last time he was held under a hundred? Quarterback didn't know how to hand off?

What's the matter, you scared for your boy Norwood?? I would be.

DeAngelo has been held to under 100 yards 2 other times in now 23 games as a starting running back. The "back-up" QB for Memphis iis/was better than the guy starting, and if he hadn't been in a protective boot for the last month, he'd have won the starting job and that poor boy wouldn't got his leg broken. So, it's mute. Ole Miss running defense is gonna be good...we got to work at lots of things, but I firmly believe Ole Miss will get better and better throughout the year...

Ain't hard to keep him under 100 when the starting quarterback breaks his leg on the third play. Just stop Williams. Had it not been for Ole Miss's interception that set up their only touchdown and two defensive interceptions at the goal line, the outcome would have been totally different. From my standpoint there was no talent on the field, period. You could fumble further than you can punt.

Ole Miss best find some O-fense and in a hurry, if Memphis wasn't made up of big school rejects other than running back they would have clobbered your sorry Rebel arses. I hope someone gets that team a truckload of Cialas cuz that offense is as limp as fag in Platinum. Memphis' defense gave up last year and will again give up many, many points this year. The best Ole Piss could do was 10 and they stumbled into it. Hell, State may win another game this year after all.

The ESPN crew noted probably 5 different variations of that one play to get Mo Avery the ball out of that one formation. That back up did look pretty good.

No, there're gonna win at least two more games ---Auburn next Saturday and the Hogs, who lost their mojo (Jones).

I didn't think I was being that harsh on Ole Miss. Patrick Willis did look good.

Not hard to stop the run when you know the opponent only has 1 choice and that is run.

No, I am not scared for Norwood, his play will do the talking. I know my team isn't great and can admit unlike some others.

Spurlock's TD run ---note how much faster he is than everyone else on the field ---its like everyone else is in slow motion.

And the look on JLD's face is priceless. Great contrast between JLD and a fired up Coach O. Yeah baby.

Makes me want to head butt someone.

You know, what your saying here makes alot of sense if it were true. BUT Memphis threw the ball more than they ran it, so I don't see this point??? I'm not trying to argue that Ole Miss is good or anything like, they got alot of holes and alot of work to do, but when your being critical, at least make sense...and if you don't believe me, listen to Memphis sportstalk and Coach West press conference, they agreed Williams shoulda gotten the ball more...You make it sounds like that handed it to DeAngelo every play and it was easy for us to stop that so they couldn't score and we win...nothing at all like that...

And Ole Miss had 1 goalline interception, the one the ended the game, the other was at midfield and returned to the 17, once again, when your trying to talk $#!+, at least know what your talking about...

And if yall wanna be so condescending, if Ole Miss had caught a couple passes, the score woulda been outta hand in the first half, with or without a hurt Memphis QB...

Coulda...woulda...shoulda....if this...if that.....Ole Miss got a ugly win and can now try to get ready for Vandy who I think has a very good chance of beating the Rebs. Memphis looked as ugly as the Rebs and came up six yards short of making it a three-peat. I do not think either school will win more than four games if they play that way against future teams. May have just been first game jitters, heck Miami and FSU looked awful as well. Coach O better use Spurlock where his talents lay. Roll out of the pocket where he can see the open field and do not be scared to let him tuck the ball and run. O has two "quality" back up QB so why not loosen the reins and give Spurlock some open field to work with. With the Ole Miss defense keeping games close and Spurlock being used in a way where he is a real threat, the Rebs may could pull off a 6-5 or 7-4 season. As far as the Bullies go, I really hope Conner is that much improved. If he can just open the offense up enough to allow Norwood some freedom, they too could pull off some wins.

Got a good chance against the Houston/Monroe Green Wave given the situation.

The Ruston Green Wave now since they've been moved to La Tech.
