6. MISSISSIPPI
The University of Mississippi is home to the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, which is not unlike placing a goldfish bowl inside your 100-gallon aquarium. Last May the Center hosted a lecture entitled "No Easy Rider: Archie Manning and '60s Youth Culture." Ole Miss, with its Rebel mascot and its bounty of belles ("We redshirt Miss Americas," one student boasts), is as Dixie as it gets. And Oxford, though it sometimes seems to move at a drawl's pace, is as magical a stop as you'll find on a tour of the SEC.
12. MISSISSIPPI STATE
Starkville. Well, at least whoever named this burg did not pull an Eric the Red (he's the dude who named Greenland and Iceland, even though the latter is greener and the former is icy) and misrepresent this pimple on the SEC's backside. Nevertheless, Starkvillians are damn proud of their town--just like the folks of Blaine were proud of theirs in Waiting for Guffman.
