when you're "hi-ballin" in their face and they flare..............too much.

As Frankie Tomminello once told me, Mark, you gotta call them ducks til they hit the water. Somebody else is gonna steal your ducks.

Some days you can have 5 hunters hooting at them and it doesn't matter. Others days they are spooky and don't want to be called to. Check out the wing beat. A duck will let you know if he wants to be called to or not.

Ducks arent really that hard to read. You can tell by the way they respond when you first start chatterin at em. Watch there wings and tail ends. It takes a little time but if ya pay attention you can tell if you are flarrin ducks or makin em wanna come down and die. tk

I agree with Bigbee for the most part about watching the ducks reactions while calling. When you notice a duck react to your call you stay on that duck and calling at it.

If you listen when a bunch of ducks are sitting on the water, they make a tremendous amount of noise, especially when other ducks are in the air, so I am not so sure about the over calling part but I think soft and loud make more difference. Just my 1 cent.

You will almost never scare ducks off with soft clucks and whines for what I call "confidence noise". Going all "Mr. Arkansas" and continuing to belt 30 note screaming highballs at them when they are already commited is pretty bush league, but I see it flare ducks ALL THE TIME. My complaint is not the fact that someone is calling, but the "I am gonna put the extreme acrylic volume on 'em just 'cause I can" mentality. I think a lot of the "don't call when they are coming stuff" is that ducks will pick out "Mr. Arkansas' hands flapping or face shining when they are close 'cause his eyes are all bugged out from lack of air from blowing that Main Street routine.

callin less is definately better most the time.

While it is a good idea ta check their reactions, very few things, other than too much kazoo blowin, have flared as many ducks as those bright shiney faces lookin up at em. If you're not wearin a full face mask, or don't have your face fully painted, you shouldn't be lookin any place but at your feet.

Ta illustrate the less is more point (particularly later in the year), here is a very good example. Was watchin a bunch of ducks on the water off a levy in the delta several years ago. It was late in the season. Another flock flew by, and when the ducks on the water started "calling", the ducks in the air flared. Flared from live ducks. Decide fer yourself.

I don't know why you even bother to carry a gun. All you need to do is hit that hail call you have a little bit harder and they should all just fall from the sky!

Hell pelahatchie dawg, I have to blow hard enough to drown out that AVION INFLUENZA duck call you've been throwing at them.

And besides, I have to carry my gun. The duck strap was looking pretty weak yesterday morning during the first hour when, as an attempt to allow my "youth" guest to do my shooting, I did not fire a shot. Of course when I got the ole A5 out, WE started whacking and stacking them.

I stick to the "tips and tails" idea. Only call at their wing tips and tail feathers.
