He was going fishing, WITH A GRENADE, and he was packing more gunpowder into it and it blew up. It messed him up pretty bad.
From WCBI
Two people are injured one critically in Pontotoc County after a grenade explodes in a home. According to Sheriff Leo Mask, 23-year-old David M. Russell was trying to add gunpowder to a practice grenade when it exploded in his hand. Russell's stepfather was also injured in the blast. Mask says Russell had just returned from Iraq and may have brought the Grenade home with him. Bomb units from both Tupelo and Memphis were called. Agents with the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearm,The FBI and homeland security have joined in the investigation. Mask says Russell was planning to use the grenade for fishing.

Pontotoc Progress
A young soldier just back from Iraq was critically injured when a grenade he was holding exploded prematurely Sunday evening while he was apparently trying to add powder to the device, according to Pontotoc County Sheriff Leo Mask.
David M. Russell, age 23, of Seales Bend Road, had recently returned from Iraq and was supposed to leave out Friday for Alaska.
“He had a dummy grenade and he was trying to put some more powder in it and it exploded on him,†Mask said.
Witnesses told the Sheriff that Russell and a cousin were going to throw the grenade in a nearby pond and make the fish float up to the top.
“His cousin was in there (Russell’s shop) when they heard something pop or click and he (Russell) hollered, ‘Run!’— and that’s when it exploded,†Mask said.
“When we got down there, we found powder and stuff down there and we called ATF (the Bureau of Alcohol. Tobacco and Firearms) and they came and helped us. And we called Homeland Security and they came, and the FBI came.â€
Mask said the Tupelo Police Department’s bomb squad also responded, but did not have the equipment necessary to remove some of the materials found in the shop on the property where the incident occurred.
“So they contacted the Memphis Police Department bomb squad, and they removed the hazardous materials from the shop,†he said.
Some of the materials removed from the shop included gunpowder, caps and switches and fuses.
Mask said that although the incident is still under investigation, the main concern at this time is the welfare of the young soldier.
In a phone call just prior to press time, a family member stated that Russell was listed in critical but stable condition.

During my service in the MSARNG, I set off quite a few grenade similators and artillery similators. They were pre-packaged, needed no assembly or gunpowder added, and directions for use adn warnings were printed on the device. We were also trained in the use of them.
Unless the Army is now using some type of re-usable and re-loadable grenade training devices, I cannot fathom anyone opening up one of these things to "add more gunpowder". Those things were pretty potent back when I was using them in training ----capable of blowing your arm off and/or killing you with a concussion if it went off too close to you. They would send up quite a large mushroom cloud.

the devise they use now is a hollow steel grenade shell and screw a detnatoin(sp) primer no powder but still will blow a finger or hand off.

Is that all? Good grief. Calling in the FBI, Homeland Security, etc. etc. sounds like a little overkill for a redneck fishin' trip gone bad?
