I am setting up a kennel to write off all my dog fun on taxes. And so my wife will let me do more hunt test and games. Need some ideas on naming kennel. I live in Corinth, hunt in Tallahatchie, Quitman, and Warren Counties.

4Dawgs,

I write off mine as well, but I was told by my accountant that until I start racking in some big money that getting the name registered and getting a tax ID number, you can just write it off on your personal taxes. So, that is what I do. Dogs can be expensive and my wife was like yours.

You will need some type of income or potential income to do this legitimately. I have an investment business that I use to run my dog stuff through. When I sell some puppies or do anything to produce income I show it as income to the business. You can show a loss 3 out of 5 years in a business. My tax advisor informed me that if audited the dog expenses may or may not hold up depending on the amount of income/potential income vs. the expenses. Or in plain terms, if I knew I would never make a profit the expenses would not be legit. The key word there is KNEW. If you want more info pm me and I can help you with the process of setting up a business.

Kaustin is write on the money of what my accountant told me. That is why he writes it off with my other taxes unless/until I make some type of profit.

That was my understanding as well. I usually have one litter of pups per year and now have several dogs that are started level and will be selling in the next year.

I did not realize you where that active with the breeding. My first stop would be the AKC website. They have some regulations before they will register a kennel. Filing the name with the state is easy. Any lawyer can help you set up a LLC for the tax #. I like 4dawgs kennel, but it may turn rebels away  . If you have access to the land all year for training, I like tri-county kennel. You could always go with slugburger kennels :D Basically try to find what will set you you apart and use that. You want it to become a name that is recognizable. When people hear it, they think of you and your service. Hope that made sense and helped a little.

Thanks for the info Kenny. I actually have 2 breedable dogs but I won't breed the little black female until I've had her at least a year to see if she's even offspring worthy. My yellow female had a great litter last Nov. and I plan on breeding her to a GRHRCH yellow this fall if she doesn't come in heat before I can get some finished runs. She ran a blind so hard today she almost turned a somersalt through a patch of cover and ditch. She has turned out to be a nice dog, even though she spent the first year of her life with an old lady laying on the couch.
